AMD has had an absolutely fantastic journey with their Zen-based EPYC processors thus far, not only taking their prominence into the server space, but also giving their rivals sleepless nights. AMD's journey is far from over, but it appears that the company will soon reach its first milestone in this segment, reaching double digits in market share.

AMD Expected to Break 10% of Server CPU Market Share in 2020

In a report released by DigiTimes , it is stated that AMD is expected to break 10% of the server CPU market share in 2020. Now 10% doesn't seem significant, but keep in mind that AMD started with a 0% market share when it launched its first generation of EPYC processors in 2017, a gain of 10 in just three significant years.

AMD has secured many orders and offers for its second-generation EPYC processors, and some of the upcoming supercomputers are expected to make use of their new-generation EPYC Rome. The efficiency of the performance and the total number of cores and threads obtained in the AMD EPYC processors is causing that several of the big companies are betting on them, with clients like Microsoft and Google.

In 2018, former Intel CEO Brian Krzanich had stated that his job was not to let AMD capture 15-20% of the server market share. Well, things are getting complicated and it does not seem that the trend will change in the short term. AMD already has its third generation of 7nm EPYC processors ready and Intel has its new Copper Lake-based Xeon ready, albeit at 14nm. The technological advantage (7nm vs 14nm), the number of cores and competitive prices seem to be the key for AMD to continue growing. We will keep you informed.
