Before a product launch, we were inundated with an avalanche of news and rumors. Now, the official announcement has been made of the new Threadripper 2 that we expected for a few days.

Price and specifications of the new Threadripper 2

The new generation is made up of 4 high-performance processors that seek to harm their most direct competitor, Intel, by increasing the number of cores and various improvements to 'refine' these CPUs compared to the previous generation.

Now, we have “WX” series processors referring to the highest range of this platform, oriented to workstations, with the “X” series relegated to the two lower versions. Beyond marketing, the physical difference is that the WX will make use of the 4 'die' that are in each Threadripper, while the X will continue to use 2 while the rest are completely unused.

The generational enhancements AMD has specified are up to a 15% improvement in L3 cache latency, 9% in L2, and 8% in L1, and a reduced memory access latency of 2% over the first generation.. As in the new Ryzen 2000 series, Precision Boost 2 is used. It has also gone through the manufacturing process of 12nm ( 14nm + renamed ) compared to 14nm of the previous generation.

Let's get down to business and look at the processors featured and their prices:

This corresponds exactly with the leaks published just 3 days ago, which means that AMD has positioned a really aggressive price for a range of CPUs with such a huge number of cores. In this aspect, it is positioned as the cheapest option, but… What will happen in other types of applications that do not focus so much on the multicore, where latencies and single-core performance are more important? Time and the first reviews will tell if we are really dealing with interesting CPUs or not.

According to AMD these processors do not have a heatsink included. What happened to the Wraith Ripper…?

The presale we are talking about is found in stores like Newegg (USA) or Amazon.com (USA), and we have also found it in the United Kingdom. However, here are the announced release dates for the processors:

  • 2990WX: August 13 2970WX: October 18 2950X: August 31 2920X: October 18

For those who already have a Threadripper processor, the X399 chipset will continue to be used in this new generation. However, to power the WX versions you may have to perform an update due to its increased consumption and the consequent need for more powerful VRMs. We already talked in this news about the solutions taken by the different manufacturers.

Now that the official announcement has been made, the thing is not over. Although we have already seen the unboxings of these processors, a few days of interesting news await us with the first reviews and performance tests of these processors, in addition to more details such as their price in Europe. If NVIDIA releases its new graphics this month, we are definitely going to be left with a very interesting month of August!
