Today we have in our hands the new AMD Athlon 200GE, the cheapest Zen-based processor to date. It is a dual-core, four-wire processor, along with an integrated graphics core that is based on the Vega architecture, and offers excellent multimedia capabilities. This processor can become the new king of the low range, we will see if it fulfills what it promises.

First of all, we thank AMD for the trust placed in ceding the product to us for analysis.

Unboxing and design

The AMD Athlon 200GE processor comes in a good quality cardboard box with a colorful design. The box informs us of the most important features of the new processor, such as its Zen architecture and integrated Vega-based graphics.

We open the box and find the processor inside a plastic blister to offer the best protection, this is very important, since the AMD processors include the contact pins for the socket at its bottom, and not on the motherboard as it happens with Intel chips. Next to the processor we see the documentation and a Wraith Stealth heatsink, the most basic heatsink model from AMD, but that will be enough for a processor like this.

The heatsink includes pre-applied thermal paste on the base, thereby making installation as easy as possible.

A close-up of the AMD Athlon 200GE, the design of the processor is identical to that of Ryzen chips. At the top we see the IHS screen-printed, and with the surface very well polished to ensure the best possible contact with the copper base of the heatsink. At the bottom are all contact pins, gold plated to prevent corrosion and improve contact.

Ryzen processors are known to offer many cores, though we've also seen quad-core variants like the Ryzen 3 1200 and more recently the 2200G. However, this Athlon 200GE is a dual-core, four-wire model with a knockdown sale price. The two cores of the Athlon 200GE operate at a fixed clock frequency of 3.2 GHz, without any turbo. This processor includes 5MB of cache in total and an integrated Radeon GPU includes only 3 compute units, which translates to 192 shaders.

AMD Athlon 200GE is manufactured using the Global Foundries 14nm FinFET node, the same used in all processors based on the Raven Ridge die. This processor is a heavily cropped version of the Raven Ridge silicon, with just two of its four active cores, and a graphics core that holds only 192 shaders out of the 704 that it includes in total.

These characteristics have allowed the company to maintain a TDP of only 35W, with which we are talking about a processor that will be a lighter, and we will be able to operate it even with a poor quality power supply, such as those that are integrated in the cheap chassis. Although it is always advisable to opt for a source of proven quality, this point is important for the tightest budgets.

One of the features that users have liked the least is that this AMD Athlon 200GE processor does not allow overclocking, the company could have made this decision to avoid that it could harm sales of the Ryzen 3, which include four cores but the same four processing threads than this AMD Athlon 200GE. AMD has not given any official reason to justify the lack of overclocking in this new processor for the input range.

AMD claims that this Athlon 200GE offers a level of performance similar to that of the Pentium G4560, which has been a very popular processor in recent years, but is already too low to play. This AMD Athlon 200GE processor can be perfect for students, casual gamers, for use on a familiar PC for surfing the web, checking email, and other undemanding tasks. This processor will be the perfect companion to a cheap A320 motherboard, with this we can mount a PC for very little money, and in the future give the saint to a Ryzen 3 processor or even a Ryzen 5 if the VRM of the motherboard allows it..

To check the stability of the AMD Athlon 200GE processor, our tests have been stressing the processor with AIDA64 and its standard air cooling. The graph that we have used is the integrated one of the processor, without further delay, let's see the results obtained in our tests with a 1024 x 720 pixel monitor, since the tests are fair in this resolution and we have discarded the option of putting the results in Full HD.

Testing in 720p games

We get somewhat disappointing results at 1280 x 720 with all settings to a minimum. The game that has gone best is Shadow Tomb Raider at 20 FPS on average. The gaming experience is very fair with current games, we must go to older titles or use this equipment for other purposes. Of course, we can equip it with a cheap dedicated graphics card to boost it… but the same thing would interest us more a Ryzen 3 or an APU 2200G or 2400G.

Consumption and temperature

By having a low frequency and having only 2 cores activated with SMT, we obtain 25 ºC at rest with the stock sink and a maximum of 45 ºC at maximum power.

And it is exactly the same with consumption, which is excellent, obtaining just 28 W at rest and a maximum of 50 W at maximum performance. That last! This equipment is ideal for home server, HTPC or surfing the internet.

Final words and conclusion about AMD Athlon 200GE

The AMD Athlon 200GE is a low-end processor based on Raven Ridge, but it gives very good performance for office use, emulators and web browsing. We also see it very interesting for low-cost multimedia centers (HTPC) for its interesting integrated VEGA graphics card.

And it is that at the HD gaming level it defends itself, but the results range from 10 to 20 FPS in the main games of our test bench. So it can be very interesting for games from a few years ago or for emulator systems. In this case, it has left us a bittersweet flavor.

We recommend reading the best processors on the market

For a few months, the possibility of overclocking these processors has been enabled. We have managed to increase the base speed to 4200 MHz but with very light performance, we have seen it so small that we did not want to publish the results. Although you will soon see the analyzes of the new Athlon models?

Currently we can find the AMD Athlon 200GE in online stores for 55 euros. A great starting price for a great processor. What do you think about the AMD Athlon 200GE? We want to know your opinion!
