AMD could have announced the Athlon 3000G last week, but apparently, the chipmaker hasn't finished with the Athlon series announcements yet. A recent Geekbench listing points to a new chip, the Athlon Gold 3150U, which is likely aimed at notebook computers.

AMD Athlon Gold 3150U APU featured on GeekBench

It seems that AMD is trying to imitate the nomenclatures of Intel, which has in its catalog the Pentium Gold and Silver to its credit. It is the first time that we have seen an AMD processor with "Gold" in its model name.

Geekbench 4 detected Athlon Gold 3150U as a Raven Ridge piece. However, there are some doubts about it, as Geekbench 4 has been wrong in the past. If we look at the Athlon Gold 3150U list carefully, we can detect AMD Family 23 Model 24 Stepping 1 as identification. This is the same identification as the Athlon 300U, which belongs to the Picasso family. The processor ID for Raven Ridge is AMD Family 23 Model 17 Stepping 0. Therefore, most likely, the Athlon Gold 3150U and Athlon 300U are siblings. Both processors even share identical specs, based on the Geekbench list.

The Athlon Gold 3150U comes with two cores and four threads. The processor has a base clock of 2.4 GHz and a turbo clock that scales up to 3.28 GHz; although it is suspected that when the processor is on the market it will reach 3.3 GHz. The dual-core APU apparently has 193KB of L1 cache, 1MB of L2 cache and 4MB of L3 cache.

Since the Athlon Gold 3150U and Athlon 300U have similar specifications, it's hard to know which one is faster without knowing the TDP (Thermal Design Power) of the former. However, a quick comparison on Geekbench 4 shows that the Athlon Gold 3150U comes out on top. Apparently, it's 3.3% faster on single-core workloads and 7.4% faster on multi-core workloads than the Athlon 300U.
