Mercury Research has just released its estimates of processor market shares for the fourth quarter of 2018, and the results are clear. AMD is gaining ground, with figures not seen since 2014. Thus, AMD is making significant progress across the board, including servers, desktops and notebooks, a sign that Ryzen and EPYC are being a resounding success for the company.
AMD is gaining more and more ground with its Ryzen and EPYC processors on all fronts
Thus, as can be seen in the table below, AMD now has a market share of 3.2% in servers, 15.8% in processors for desktop computers and 12.1% in laptops.
If we compare the figures with the fourth quarter of 2017, we see that the growth is enormous, especially in the desktop processor market , which went from 12 to 15.8%, but also in the notebook market, where AMD passes from 6.9 to 12.1%, almost double the market share from one year to the next.
The increase compared to the previous quarter is also measurable, + 1.5% for servers, + 2.8% for desktop PCs and + 1.3% for laptops.
Ryzen desktop processors launched in March 2017. The first first-generation EPYC processors were released in June of the same year, while AMD's Raven Ridge APUs began shipping to laptops in October. Overall, it appears that the Zen architecture has been regaining the x86 market share that AMD has lost in recent years, and with the imminent launch of its 7nm products, the company looks set to continue gaining ground on Intel on all fronts.
