All attention is focused on NVIDIA's new series of RTX 20 12nm graphics cards in recent weeks, which promise to deliver 40% more performance than their predecessors. AMD seems not to be with arms crossed and is preparing for a 'counterattack' with its first Radeon VEGA 20 graphics cards in 7nm, although they will not be focused on players, but for the professional sector.
AMD Confirms Launch of 7nm Radeon VEGA 20 Graphics Cards in 2018
AMD President and CEO Lisa Su confirmed in an interview with Marketwatch that AMD is on track to launch the world's first 7nm graphics cards this year. While the world's first 7nm CPUs, built on the company's next-generation 64-bit Zen 2 x86 core, are on the way to be available next year.
Based on an improved iteration of the VEGA architecture that debuted last year, the new GPU is shaping up to be a beast of processing. The new GPU is AI-compliant and features four 8GB stacks of HBM2 memory that run through a 4096-bit memory interface for a total of 32GB of vRAM.
VEGA 20 would be 25% higher than Turing
VEGA 20 is reportedly capable of getting an incredible 20.9 TFLOPS of graphing. If this were true, it would become the first GPU in the world to achieve this figure, being 25% higher than Turing.
What is not clear at the moment is whether there will be 7nm graphics cards focused for VEGA-based video games, or without we will have to wait until the Navi generation to see them.
For now, VEGA 20 will be used in the next Radeon Instinct graphics cards for the professional sector.
