AMD CEO Lisa Su confirmed yesterday during the JP Morgan Global Conference on Technology, Media and Telecommunications that the company will release products this year based on a 7nm manufacturing process.

AMD Zen 2 and Navi based on a 7nm process will arrive this year

AMD announced during Financial Analyst Day last week that over the next three years it will release two additional generations of products to replace the Zen architectures for processors and Vega for graphics.

Specifically, the Zen and Zen 3 products based on 7nm and 7nm + processes, respectively, will arrive to replace the micro-architecture of Zen CPUs (14nm / x86 process). On the other hand, the Vega graphic architecture will be replaced by Navi products, which in turn will have 7nm and 7nm + technology.

Likewise, the CEO of the company also reported that they are currently applying a new research and development strategy whereby they have several teams working on two processors and graphics simultaneously in order to always be at the forefront of technology.

In this way, AMD is preparing both the Zen 2 and Zen 3 processors and the Navi graphics products. According to Su's latest comments, the first products of these new generations will hit the market this year, a fact that is supported by the recent announcement by GlobalFoundries, AMD's partner for manufacturing 7nm products, according to which the production with the 7nm process in the second half of 2018.

In the same time period, Intel is also expected to launch its second generation of 10nm products. While the 7nm and 10nm processes from AMD and Intel are not comparable, this shows just how close the gap has been closed between Intel and the rest of the industry manufacturers, who do their best to stay competitive in the market.
