With the arrival of AMD Raven Ridge processors, we have seen solder replaced by IHS with thermal paste, something that lowers production costs but damages dissipation, as der8auer has already shown. AMD has confirmed that second-generation Ryzen processors will have the same solder as the first generation.

AMD will continue to use solder on second-generation Ryzen processors

Processors with the IHS welded to the die transmit the heat generated to the heatsink in a much more efficient way than those based on thermal paste, this allows the maximum temperature reached by the processor to be more than 10 degrees lower. That is why welded processors are highly appreciated by users, especially fans of overclocking.

Robert Hallock of AMD has confirmed that the new second-generation Ryzen processors will come with the die welded to the IHS, just like the current first-generation Ryzen. This confirms that the decision made with Raven Ridge is due to the fact that it is a product that seeks to be as economical as possible, where every euro saved matters a lot.

Ryzen's second generation will build on GlobalFoundries' 12nm manufacturing process, allowing them to achieve higher operating frequencies without increased power consumption. These new processors will start arriving in April.
