AMD chief architect Mike Clark confirmed today in a video interview that his team has already started work on the 'Zen 5' microarchitecture for new Ryzen processors to arrive in years to come. The video, which can be viewed below, was released earlier today to commemorate the upcoming launch of the Ryzen 2000 series, scheduled for April 19. The video includes a panel discussion with AMD's top people from the CPU engineering and marketing departments.

'Zen 5' would arrive in 2021, AMD will not use the Zen 4 nomenclature

In the current roadmap, AMD's plans were considered up to the Zen 3 generation, which would arrive in 2020. AMD would be omitting the Zen 4 nomenclature and would go directly to name this new generation of CPUs as Zen 5, due to the Negative connotations associated with the number 4 in the Chinese language.

The company already confirmed in May last year that work on the Zen 2 and Zen 3 cores was well underway, and that Zen 2 would debut next year with 7nm technology. Zen 2 is the first CPU core designed by the company with 7nm litho and the first architectural successor to the original Zen design introduced last year.

We must take into account the Ryzen 2000 series processors that will be released this month, they do not belong to the Zen 2 generation, but to the Zen + generation. The first Zen 5 chips are expected to arrive in 2021.
