This week, Cray, one of the biggest names in supercomputing architecture design and implementation, announced a major new platform for projects that will enter the next decade. Released under the codename " Shasta ", the platform is highly extensible and characterized by its unique scale performance capabilities and data-centric workloads. Shasta's promise has led to it being chosen as the foundation for the National Research Research Scientific Computing Center's supercomputer Perlmutter, which will begin operating in 2020.

Shasta's launch and NERSC's Perlmutter announcement are also great news for AMD's EPYC enterprise-grade CPUs. When complete in 2020, Perlmutter will incorporate a series of AMD EPYC CPU nodes, speeding up scientific research and modeling to a pre-ex-scale level.

"We are proud to have AMD EPYC as a key part of the upcoming Perlmutter supercomputer. This is an important milestone for AMD and the industry as we work together to push the limits of hardware and software performance in the interest of next-generation research. I thank Cray for including AMD early in their consideration process and NERSC for naming AMD EPYC in their final selection.
While the details of the CPU of the EPYC class selected for the final Perlmutter implementation have not been revealed, AMD has described it as a 'EPYC CPU with many points of the future generation'. So it seems likely that it is a new architecture manufactured with 7nm TSMC, potentially the Zen 2 architecture or its successor 'Milan'.
7nm amd epyc will be used in a finnish supercomputer with 200,000 cores
The CSC will use the 7nm EPYC 'Rome' chips, which together will add about 200,000 cores for its new supercomputer.
