AMD experienced considerable growth in the processor market during the first quarter of 2017, when the company recorded a 2.2% increase in its market share against Intel. This marks the first time that the CPU maker has experienced such a large increase in its market share against its big rival Intel since the first quarter of 2014.

The new data comes from the latest PassMark report, a database that is based on benchmark submissions and not on equipment sold. Furthermore, this report also does not take into account consoles or PCs with different Windows operating systems.

AMD increases market share thanks to Ryzen

Intel vs. AMD - CPU Market Share

Although the increase of 2.2% does not seem too much, the truth is that it is a considerable figure considering that the new AMD Ryzen processors were only available for 1 month out of the 3 months that make up the first quarter of 2017. Furthermore, only Ryzen 7 processors were available for sale at the time, when they were also quickly out of stock. This means that AMD likely sold all the Ryzen processors it has been manufacturing.

On the other hand, AMD Ryzen's initial launch was also hampered by a shortage of AM4 motherboards, but right now it's no longer a problem and more than enough Ryzen CPU units can be found in stores thanks to the launch of Ryzen 5 chips for the past month.

AMD's user base grew by 12% thanks to Ryzen 7 sales in March

In the time period between January 1, 2017 and March 31 of the same year, the AMD processor installation base grew from 18.1%, excluding consoles, to 20.3%. This represents a cumulative growth of 12%.

Ryzen CPUs debuted in early March, and much of AMD's growth in this market during the first quarter of the year is attributed to users who bought and built Ryzen-based PCs.
