AMD has made a blog post to describe an upcoming feature for its Threadripper processors called " Dynamic Local Mode ", which should go a long way in improving game performance on the latest AMD HEDT CPUs.

Dynamic Local Mode, the vitamins Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX needs in games

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX uses four Zeppelin dies in a multi-chip package, of these four dies only two have direct access to RAM memory modules. The other two arrays have to use Infinity Fabric to access memory, which has a significant impact on latency.

Many applications require very little memory access so they are not affected by this limitation in processor design. In contrast, other applications, especially games, are highly dependent on access to RAM, so they end up with higher -than-expected memory latency, resulting in lower performance.

On Threadripper processors and with the Ryzen Master tool, users can freely switch between Local Memory Access mode or Distributed Memory Access mode, the latter being the default for Threadripper, resulting in the highest performance of the computer application. On the other hand, Local Mode is better suited to gaming, but switching between modes requires a reboot, which is very uncomfortable for users.

MODEL Cores / threads Turbo / Base Frequency (GHz) L3 cache (MB) TDP (W) PCIe Gen 3.0 Lanes Price
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX 32/64 4.2 / 3.0 64 250W 64 $ 1, 799
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX 24/48 4.2 / 3.0 64 250W 64 $ 1, 299
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2950X 16/32 4.4 / 3.5 32 180W 64 $ 899
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2920X 12/24 4.3 / 3.5 32 180W 64 $ 649

AMD's new Dynamic Local Mode seeks to eliminate that requirement by introducing a background process, which continuously monitors all running applications to optimally distribute them to cores that have direct access to memory. Applications that require very little CPU in turn are inserted into the cores without memory access, because they are not that important for fast execution. AMD talks about an improvement in games of up to 47%.

This update will be available from October 29 on Ryzen Master and will be automatically enabled unless the user manually chooses to disable it.
