Rivals but also partners when there is a common interest, Intel and AMD announced yesterday their joint work to create a powerful CPU + GPU solution in a very compact package that will allow very powerful new equipment and in a very small format. AMD will not have access to the new EMIB technology.
AMD Will Not Benefit From EMIB Technology
AMD has created a supposedly Polaris-based GPU designed to conform to Intel's specifications without the IP being shared between the two companies. In this way, Intel becomes one more client in terms of AMD custom chips, one of the company's biggest businesses in recent years.
Something very interesting is the fact that the GPU section of the new Intel product will not use an interposer as AMD has done in its previous GPU + HBM products. Intel has decided to use its own EMIB technology as an alternative, something that allows it to greatly reduce the complexity and cost of the final design.

One of the biggest questions is whether AMD could license Intel's EMIB technology, allowing it to create future GPU + HBM2 memory solutions without the need for a complex and expensive interposer. The agreement between Intel and AMD has no license agreements so AMD will not be able to access this new technology from its new partner.
This makes a lot of sense since EMIB would give AMD a huge advantage as it is a much faster connection than its current Infinity Fabric bus so it could be a huge improvement for its Threadripper and EPYC processors which would cause many problems to Intel. EMIB would also be very advantageous for Vega graphics as it would be a cheaper alternative to silicon interposers.
With all this it seems clear that AMD will have to continue working on its Infinity Fabric to improve the performance of its future products and perhaps replace the silicon interposers in its GPU + HBM solutions.
