AMD has just officially unveiled the roadmap for Zen architecture, spanning the Zen 2 and Zen 3 range of processors geared toward the high-performance computing and data center market.

AMD Zen 2 with 7nm process and Zen 3 with 7nm + process will arrive in 2018 and 2019

Just a few months ago AMD launched its Ryzen processors, but the company is already making plans for its next high-performance CPUs. According to AMD's roadmap, the processors based on the Zen architecture will be followed by the Zen 2 and Zen 3 CPUs, which would boast performance improvements, new features and more IPC gain over the current Zen core.

The company has already recorded a huge 52% gain in the IPC (Instruction by Cycle) with the Zen architecture, so the next Zen 2 and Zen 3 will probably also provide improvements of between 5 and 15% in the IPC, Although the company has not offered concrete details for now.

Still, Lisa Su, the AMD CEO, recently confirmed in a Reddit AMA that they have a huge team working to get the new processors to market with all possible improvements.

Some of the changes that we will see in the new Zen architectures will be the following:

  • Higher performance Continuous performance gain per watt Focused execution

Roadmap - AMD Zen 2 and Zen 3

Finally, it is known that the current Zen architecture, which is currently based on the 14nm and 14nm + processes, will be succeeded by Zen 2 in 2018 (made based on a 7nm process).

The Zen 2 cores will be replaced a year later, in 2019, by Zen 3, which will be based on an improved version of the 7nm process, known as 7nm +.

In addition, the Zen 2 architecture will be used in a new range of products known as Pinnacle Ridge, which will come to replace Summit Ridge.
