After a long wait, AMD has announced at CES 2019 the new Radeon VII graphics cards that come to bring the second generation of Vega. Will they meet expectations? Let's see it.

AMD Radeon VII: Vega second generation, launched at $ 699

After several minutes explaining the benefits of AMD's products, it shows maximum expectation but, in the end, AMD presented the Radeon VII, the brand's first 7nm graphic.

The new Radeon VII will feature 60 computing units, with 25% more performance with the same power consumption, 16GB VRAM and memory bandwidth of up to 1TB / s.

AMD has shown the productivity performance of the new Radeon VII with improvements of 27% in Blender, 27% in DaVinci Resolve, 29% in Premiere and 62% in OpenCL compared to Vega 64.

But what most interested us are the performance improvements in terms of games. AMD has shown improvements of 35% in Battlefield V (DX12), 25% in Fortnite (DX11) and 42% in Strange Brigade (Vulkan).

What has surprised the most has been the comparative performance sample between the RTX 2080 and Radeon VII. According to AMD, its performance is the same in Battlefield V and Fortnite (DX12 and DX11 respectively), and superior in Strange Brigade (the latter works with Vulkan). But it remains to be seen what the overall improvement is and in other games that could be less favorable to AMD.

They have also announced that The Division 2 (to be announced soon) will run at 4K 60fps with Radeon VII, but not to mention the graphics settings used.

Another very important unknown is consumption, because AMD talks about " more performance with the same energy consumption ", which might not be very encouraging considering the high consumption of the RX Vega 64. The only thing we know for now is that the reference model will feature two 8-pin PCIe connectors, an amount that would suggest a possible consumption of more than 300W.

Price and availability: on February 7 at the price of some RTX 2080

Radeon VII will be available on February 7 for $ 699

Towards the end of the event, and when it looked like there would be no more announcements, Lisa Su announced that this new graphic will be available on February 7 at a price of $ 699. It is a price at which you can already find RTX 2080 so it is pending to see if they will really be competitive.

The new AMD looks promising, but there is still much more to know, such as other models of this new generation. What do you think of this ad? Will they be able to compete with NVIDIA? We'll find out in the next few weeks, and hopefully soon: Lisa Su has said reviewers will get their samples soon.
