Recent Linux driver patches released on August 28 seem to indicate that the next generation of APUs, codenamed AMD Renoir, will come with support for LPDDR4X-4266 memory.
AMD Renoir could be the first AMD chip to support LPDDR4X-4266
Memory plays a crucial role with APUs. Tests have shown that faster memory can often improve chip performance, especially in a gaming environment. The current AMD U and H series 'Picasso' portable APUs are officially compatible with DDR4-2400 memory, which is a bit of an understatement considering that Intel Ice Lake processors for notebooks support DDR4 formats. -3200 and LPDDR4-3733. If you want to rely on the latest Linux patches, AMD Renoir APUs could offer an improved IMC (Integrated Memory Controller) that can accommodate LPDDR4X-4266 memory modules.
The LPDDR4 format, which was introduced in 2014, peaks at 3, 200 MHz. LPDDR4X arrived three years later and increased the memory speed to 4, 266 MHz. At this time, AMD does not have a processor that supports LPDDR4X memory, but Renoir can change that. The first patch explicitly mentions Renoir's LPDDR4 memory type, while the second patch specifies the memory speed of 4.266 MHz.

An earlier patch for Linux suggests that Renoir will continue to use the graphics from Radeon Vega, more specifically Vega 10. The Linux patches on Wednesday add new information to the rumor list. It appears that Renoir will probably use the DCN (Display Next Core) 2.1 engine. The puzzling part of this is that Raven Ridge APUs use DCN 1.0, and Navi-based graphics cards use DCN 2.0. Unfortunately, the patches do not provide more information about DCN 2.1.
The AMD Renoir APUs would arrive in 2020 to replace Picasso; however, AMD has not confirmed this yet.
