With the launch of the RX 5500 XT, AMD began to nurture the low end of graphics cards. This GPU came with 4 and 8 GB variants ($ 169 and $ 199 respectively). The 4GB model is usually slower because this capacity is insufficient in some demanding games.

The 4GB model of the RX 5500 XT increases its performance with PCIe 4.0

The German website pcgameshardware.de has recently tested both versions of the RX 5500 XT using PCIe 3.0 and PCIe 4.0. The results were a little surprising. They found that when the 4GB card's VRAM buffer was full, running in a PCIe 4.0 slot improved performance by reducing the impact of VRAM usage.

The 8GB also showed small improvements from PCIe 3.0 to 4.0, but the 8GB capacity is more than enough today, so this VRAM capacity is never fully filled.

So why is this happening? Once the VRAM is full, the extra data is sent to the system RAM through the PCIe bus. The faster the bus, the faster the exchanged data will get where it needs to go and will not delay the next frame. The 5500 XT is wired as a PCIe 4.0 x8 card, providing the same theoretical bandwidth as the PCIe 3.0 x16. According to the article, AMD claims that it is sufficient for a GPU of this performance class. For all intents and purposes, this is correct. However, in the case of games that fill the installed VRAM we see that it may fall short.

What pcgameshardware.de showed was that, during memory read and write, the transfer rate was effectively halved. While PCIe 4.0 x16 would reach 12.5 GBps, x8 only reaches around 6.5-6.7 GBps, half the performance. Memory copy speeds are not affected as this is the transfer rate of the memory itself.

Improvements varied by title (and configuration), but pcgameshardware.de tested Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Battlefield V, Far Cry: New, among other games. In each test, there were improvements to the 4GB card when running on a PCIe 4.0 system. Some were significant, others not so much. Assassin's Creed and Far Cry seemed to benefit the most, along with Wolfenstein Youngblood. The 8GB variant also showed slight improvements overall, but not as much.
