Before we were commenting on the advantage of the Ryzen 9 3950X against the Threadripper 2950X, now we have to refer to a new benchmark that compares it directly with the 'old' Threadripper 1950X and another Intel processor.
Ryzen 9 3950X demonstrates its power against HEDT CPUs
Performance tests were performed on a Windows 10 PC (Build 18362) and Cinebench R20. The AMD 3950X is an upcoming processor that will land in stores priced at $ 749, and here's a sneak peak of its performance.
For these tests, OC was not applied to either of the two processors. The AMD Ryzen 9 3950X scores 8, 789 points in the Cinebench R20 version. This is a fairly large score and results in a core score of 549. The sample maintains a speed of 3.9 GHz (plus-minus 50Mhz) most of the time during the Cinebench and Prime95 tests and reaches 4.7Ghz in a single cores at most.
In comparison, the Intel 9980XE hits 8833 points and a core score of 490 points. Overclocking, of course, will change these numbers dramatically, but it's worth noting that these are the numbers that both companies are announcing and they are confident that every SKU will be able to hit. This is also 32% higher than the score achieved by the Threadripper 1950X 2 years ago.

Performance per dollar is where the AMD 3950X really shines. While the 9980XE offers 4.46 points per dollar, and the estimated Core i9-10980Xe offers 9.19 points per dollar, the Ryzen 9 3950X offers 11.73 double-digit points per dollar. This is great news for consumers because it shows how far the yield per dollar has come in the past two years; offering an acceleration of almost 3 times in perf / $ (yield per dollar) compared to the previous generation.
As we see, this AM4 processor is competing in terms of gross performance against processors designed for HEDT, thanks to the Zen 2 architecture and its 16 cores (and 32 threads). Its launch is scheduled for November.
