Finally yesterday, the new AMD Ryzen processors based on the Zen microarchitecture were announced, a new generation of high-performance chips that are coming to conquer sectors as diverse as desktop PCs, laptops and servers.

AMD Ryzen is the biggest release of the last decade

AMD Ryzen is what we have known up to now as Summit Ridge, the new generation of Sunnyvale X86 processors with a top-of-the-range model consisting of 8 physical cores and 16 threads thanks to its SMT technology. Ryzen includes numerous technologies focused on improving its performance and energy efficiency such as Smart Prefetch, Extended Frequency Range (XFR), Pure Power and Precision Boost. All of them work together with more than 100 sensors to adjust the operation of each part of the chip in milliseconds, something that Dr. Lisa Su has strongly insisted during the New Horizon event.

With all these characteristics Ryzen has achieved its goal of improving the IPC by 40% compared to the previous generation of AMD, the new processor was put face to face with the Core i7 6900K in Blender and Hadbrake, in the first test it managed to match the performance of the Intel chip and in the second it managed to exceed it with a time of 54 seconds compared to 59 seconds for the Intel processor. Impressive results if we consider that the Ryzen processor has operated at a fixed frequency of 3.4 GHz since its turbo mode was deactivated, the Core i7 6900K for its part worked at its stock frequencies of 3.2 GHz / 3.7 GHz in base modes and turbo. Even more merit for AMD since Ryzen has a TDP of only 95W compared to the 140W of the Core i7 6900K.

AMD has also shown a comparison between the two processors along with a GeForce GTX Titan X in Battlefield 1 at 4K resolution and the Ryzen processor was so fluid with the almighty Intel chip. In the final part of the test , a team with AMD Ryzen and a Vega GPU were shown running the new Battlefront DLC Rogue One at 4K resolution with absolute fluency.

This time it seems that AMD has been successful and its new Zen-based processors are going to be formidable rivals of the Intel Core, AMD Ryzen will arrive during the first quarter of 2017. Let's remember that they will use the new AM4 motherboards.
