The launch of the new AMD Ryzen processors is getting closer and closer but we still do not officially know anything about the models that will be available on the market. For now AMD has only talked about the most powerful processor with a total of 8 cores and 16 threads.

Ryzen models without SMT would be on the way

Rumors point to a low-end AMD SR3 with quad-core chips with SMT technology enabled to handle up to eight data threads, apparently also working on quad-core chips with SMT disabled for the lower range of their new processors..

The AMD Ryzen quad-core and four-wire processors would arrive with base frequencies of at least 3.4 GHz, the minimum frequency according to what was said at the New Horizons event by CEO Lisa Su herself. It seems strange that AMD wants to disable SMT in its new processors and even more so in the situation that it is in with respect to Intel and that forces it to put the batteries and offer a product as competitive as possible.

An explanation would be why AMD wants to recover its line of Black Edition processors, something that we already saw in the Phenom and that were characterized by including the unlocked multiplier. All Ryzen will come unlocked so perhaps this time the difference is in the SMT technology that would come active in the Black Edition models. This could be a good indication that AMD has reached a great level with Ryzen that allows it to fight with Intel without having more threads.
