Today we have a lot of information about what is to come in the coming months and years. However, there is a section of the red team that we have almost blank: the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3 CPUs . Here we are going to collect all the information we have so far to have a clearer idea of what awaits us.

What are AMD Ryzen Threadripper ?
As is the custom (and a good custom) , let's start by defining the topic we are talking about.
AMD Ryzen Threadrippers are a very special line of AMD processors. Unlike Intel , the red team has three main "ranges" of CPUs depending on their purpose:
- Desktop Processors The Enthusiast Range Server Drives
Well, the Threadrippers belong to this second group, which are known as HEDT (High-End Equipment, in Spanish) . They were announced together with the first generation of Ryzen processors and, more or less, followed the same date scheme. However, in this third generation they are missing.
Its main mission was to offer superior performance to that of the desktop range. For this they had more cores, bigger and better types of caches and other differentiating characteristics. Not for nothing, it must be remembered that Threadrippers were born from AMD Epyc units (for servers) that did not reach the minimum quality when built.
In the first generation we had 3 models and in the second 4 more. Below we show you a table with the most relevant information on these units:
Table of relevant data on Threadripper 1 and 2
Neither of them brings with it a solution to cool down the processors. However, for such high-end equipment we will need quite powerful refrigerations, so a standard one can fall short (especially if there is an overclock) . What all these processors do share is the sTR4 socket, so you will have to buy an X399 motherboard.
Finally, we have to tell you about its micro-architecture. Each generation has been improving the size of the transistors, having Zen Gen 1 , Zen + Gen 2 and we hope that Zen 2 Gen 3. We will delve further into the topic of micro-architectures.
Release date
The release date is a bit of a problem.
Although there were rumors that they were scheduled for the last quarter of 2019, it seems that it will not be fulfilled. This date was especially interesting, since this way they would fight with the new Intel “Cascade-Lake” Xeon processors .
However, at the Hot Chips 2019 conference, AMD President and CEO Lisa Su discouraged these rumors. Apparently AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3 is still a bit green to come out in 2019, but they may release some info by the end of the year.
With all this, it seems that Threadripper 3rd Generation will have to wait until 2020, but the confrontation with Intel is almost confirmed.
The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3 micro-architecture
As we have indicated, AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3 will come with the new Zen 2 micro-architecture. This is the same as the new Ryzen 3000 and we can assure you that they will mean a great improvement in efficiency.
One of the most remarkable things about it is that it uses new transistors of only 7nm . The first consequence of this is that nodes can contain more pieces in the same space, but that's not all.
As we lower the size scales, the transistors consume less energy. For this same reason, we can see things like the Ryzen 7 3700X having a similar performance to the Core i9-9900k with considerably less TDP .
Unfortunately, since the data we have is minimal, we don't know anything about what it will be like. Perhaps it will be structured as Ryzen 3000 , where we have two Zen 2 main units and a support unit with Zen + architecture.
Be that as it may, we can expect Zen 2 to bring a breath of power to these new processors.
Estimated yield
Being the standard bearers of the AMD HEDT range, it is clear that they should perform at least better than their previous generation.
With the implementation of a new and better micro-architecture and with the time that has passed, we can expect AMD to create better optimized systems. Now that they have released the first 7nm based components and have experience with Zen 2 . So only in the theoretical realm do we have high expectations for the upcoming AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3 .
In addition, we have some possible leaks that encourage us to think that things are on the right track. The Geekbench website database recently received two new benchmarks from mysterious units named Sharkstooth .
One of the benchmarks of the Threadripper "Sharkstooth"
From the data we have, it would coincide that they were the new AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3 , but we have nothing confirmed. It has some gaps like the used motherboard, the Operating System and others, although the other numbers are quite revealing. It far surpasses scores obtained by almost all current processors and it seems that it wants to offer battle to the Intel Xeon W-3175X itself.
Also, we expect these processors to carry out- of-range core counters. It is possible that the minimum system has 16 cores, but what is not so sure is if we will have a component with 64.
If processors follow that line and improve further, we could live in an age where AMD dominates Intel in every way. They are certainly very risky claims, but we have yet to see how good the next Blue Team processors will be.
On the other hand, we hope they have all the current technologies such as:
- Support for PCIe Gen 4 Wi-Fi 6 technology and 10 Gbps ethernet Support for high frequencies of RAM memory
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3 pricing
Possibly, the price of the next AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3 is one of the most interesting sections for most users. However, much to our regret we cannot give you confirmed information on the subject. What we can do is speculate a little about what prices we think they will take.
Since they are the highest range of user-oriented processors, it is almost automatic to think that they will cost more than ordinary CPUs . For this reason, the price of the cheapest Threadripper should not drop below € 500 (the starting price of the Ryzen 9 3950X) .
If we look at previous generations, the powers have been rising, but the prices have fallen. In the first generation, the TR 1920X cost € 800 , while the following year, the TR 2920X in the same range “lowered” their price to € 649 .
Depending on the number of processors that leave, we can estimate that prices possibly start at around € 650 and rise to around € 1, 700. Personally, to fill these price steps I would bet on an alignment with five new models.

Recently, we have had the news that the new AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3 is likely to have 3 new chipsets. It is a somewhat risky tactic, since there are many differences for a single generation, but it may work if the features are in line with their price.
The main rumor is that some CPUs will support 4-channel RAM and 8-channel RAM , thus creating the TRX40 and TRX80 chipsets. In addition, WRX80 would also be added, which would be a processor- oriented chipset for Workstations (Workstations, in Spanish) .
This differentiation would make quite a lot of sense, although they should show us a fairly prolific generation. Possibly releasing at least four new models, but it wouldn't be unusual to see a fifth.
Other features that we did not mention, but that may also be present are a good VRM system and active dissipation on the motherboard.
Like the next Ryzen 3000 , the upcoming AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3 may be forced to carry a fan. In general, it brings more discomfort than good things, so we can only pray that they do not bring them.
Undoubtedly, this seems to indicate that AMD is much more confident in itself and is now going to move away from the shadow of Intel. Changing the name of its chipsets may not be a very striking movement, but to stop being the antagonist, to become a second protagonist, as a concept, is something that stands out.
Like most data, we will have to wait for new news or leaks to know more. However, we believe that the rumor of the three chipsets is one that interests us most.
What else can we expect from AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3 ?
The truth is that we do not know much more about the subject.
The least reliable rumor we have is that of the core counter. With the large reduction in size of the transistors, it is certainly possible, but who knows if it pays off or if the full potential is used. It may depend on whether or not you keep the same socket, as sTR4 may not be able to achieve as much raw power.
We are counting on AMD to put out some very powerful systems and step on Intel's heels. However, the best scenario for most users is that we do not go "from one monopoly to another" . It would be key for Intel to maintain its leadership, which would encourage it to innovate more and be more aggressive with its prices without losing too much security cushion.
But as we have said from the beginning, all this is rumors, leaks and opinions. We can not give you anything for certain until the AMD itself offers us true information.
Now it's your turn, what do you think will be fulfilled from this list of rumors and what do you think not? Would you buy a processor from the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3 line ? Share your ideas in the comment box.
