Today a mysterious new entry has appeared in the tests of the Geekbench program. Under the AMD name "Sharkstooth, " it may be a prototype of the next generation of Threadripper processors.

The results of the AMD "Sharkstooth"

This new processor mounts 32 physical cores and 64 threads with a base frequency of 3.60GHz . Its identifier describes it as “AuthenticAMD Family 23 Model 49 Stepping 0” and it is evident that no 2nd generation Threadripper responds to these characteristics. For that same reason, the rumors about a prototype of the new Threadripper with Zen 2 architecture are something very palpable.

In single-core performance it has obtained a score of 5, 677 points, while in multi-core the figure reaches 94, 772. This puts the Intel Xeon W-3175X in the crosshairs , which performs similarly, but with a lower core counter. Here you can see the results and characteristics:

And if you want to know the results in all the subtests, you can see it in the following link to the Geekbench website. There is a second test where the single-core performance increases to 5, 932, but the multi-core drops to 93, 344 and here you can see a comparison between the two.

The relevant point is that the AMD "Sharkstooth" on this benchmark achieves approximately 18% better performance than the Threadripper 2990WX . Such an improvement over the previous generation is not something to despise and even more if we consider that these are not official data.

The end frequencies may go up and the cache settings may change slightly. On the other hand, it should be noted that the motherboard is an exclusive internal model to test this CPU . It is called "WhiteHavenOC-CP" and was paired with approximately 128GB of memory and on top of a 64bit Linux Operating System .

Surely AMD will release a new chipset to support PCIe Gen 4 with VRMs and improved cooling, but without losing backward compatibility with previous sockets. Also, 3rd generation Threadripper is expected to be announced in October to compete with the new Intel processors.

And you, what do you expect from the next generation of Threadrippers ? Do you think AMD "Sharkstooth" has something to do with it? Share your ideas in the comment box
