Jon Peddie Research's (JPR) quarterly report has shown a great quarter for AMD, with a 9.8% increase in global GPU sales. NVIDIA sales were flat during the quarter, while Intel's sales were down 1.4%. This has enabled AMD to outperform Nvidia in market share.

AMD has outperformed NVIDIA in terms of market share

Total GPU sales increased 0.6% sequentially, but decreased 10.4% compared to the prior year quarter. Considering that the overall PC market has risen during the year, the reason the dGPU market has declined can only be attributed to the crypto and overstock that was ravaging the markets. With that said, it looks like things are finally starting to clear up or settle down.

The most interesting fact here is that AMD has outperformed NVIDIA in terms of market share. This is great news for the company and something that has not happened in over 5 years. In fact, the last time AMD was at the top was in the third quarter of 2014. Although full details are hidden behind a payment server, we can see that AMD has outperformed NVIDIA on the total market share chart that It is included in the following statement:

A total of 76.7 million units were shipped in the second quarter of 2019, which decreased by -8.93 million units compared to the same quarter of the previous year, indicating that the market is negative in year-on-year terms.

Highlights

Discrete GPUs were found in 26.95% of PCs, -1.99% less than in the previous quarter. The general PC market increased 9.25% quarter-on-quarter and 3.07% year-on-year. Desktop graphics cards (AIB) that use discrete GPUs decreased -16.62% compared to the previous quarter. In the second quarter of 2019, there was a decrease in tablet sales compared to the previous quarter.

It is worth mentioning that the 0.6% increase in the GPU market quarter after quarter is a positive indicator, since, seasonally, shipments tend to drop 2% this quarter.

Another interesting observation is that the SUPER variants of the RTX series have barely been well received and have not helped Nvidia increase its market share. The numbers hardly seem to have moved.

AMD, meanwhile, appears to launch a new line of 'low-end' graphics cards soon. It will be interesting to see what the market reaction will be. Furthermore, this increase in its market share seems to respond to its RX 570-580 graphics, which are selling very well.
