Amd is also working on adding integer scaling

AMD is working to add the so-called Integer Scaling to its Adrenalin controllers, which is a new graphics technique that improves the quality of games at low resolution.

AMD Integer Scaling would arrive in next Radeon controllers

Let's put this in a situation: you have a gaming device with a modern high-resolution screen and you want to play an older game. The game is not compatible with the high resolution screen you have, so you settle for the next best resolution, the result of which is typically that the image has that increased appearance, with a smoothing between all pixels that eliminates all sharpness at the one you're used to. In short, a game with a more blurred image quality than normal. This is the result of linear interpolation.

Integer Scaling solves this problem by essentially multiplying the pixels on the screen to scale, rather than stretching the image and applying some kind of anti-aliasing technique to smooth things out. So if, for example, you have a 4K screen with a resolution of 3840 x 2160, you enable whole number scaling, and you play a game at 1080p, the monitor will behave essentially like a 1080p monitor - each four pixel block will act as one.

Nvidia has already had this feature implemented in its Turing graphics card driver since August, and the image above clearly shows the benefits of Integer Scaling. For pixel art games like FLT, Terraria, or older titles, having the pixels clearly visible greatly improves the experience of displaying pixel art the way it was designed.

We don't know yet when AMD will add Integer Scaling, but they are working on it to add it to future drivers, according to sources at PCGamesN . AMD has been found to be working on integrating this functionality thanks to the latest Linux drivers, but there has been no formal announcement yet. That said, given the information cited, as well as the fact that both Intel and Nvidia already have their implementation on public controllers, it is not too far-fetched to conclude that Integer Scaling is very close.

AMD would be planning to upgrade its drivers with new functionality in December, so we could see Integer Scaling there. We will keep you informed.
