AMD is putting the batteries in the development of microprocessors, at the end of this year its Summit Ridge chips are expected with excellent performance and capable of competing with Intel in the high range. New AMD Starship 48-core 7nm processors under development
Naples is the code name for the next AMD server processors with no less than 32 high-performance Zen cores, these chips will be succeeded by the Starship that will add up to 48 cores and go on to a more advanced manufacturing process at 7nm. In this way AMD sets a very ambitious roadmap by seeking to go directly from the 14nm of Summit Ridge / Naples to the 7nm of Starship.
The new Starship processors will be able to handle up to 96 threads thanks to its SMT technology for outstanding performance, these same chips will serve as the basis for manufacturing shorter processors and aimed at small servers and home computers. However, these new 7nm processors won't arrive until at least 2018, so we wouldn't easily see their actual availability until 2019. It all depends on Global Foundries having their 7nm node ready to manufacture at Zen successor cores. Starship will arrive on processors with a TDP between 35W and 180W showing great scalability.
