AMD is preparing some changes in regards to its current FreeSync 2 technology, which is going to have a name change, which, according to them, better represents this technology.

FreeSync 2 HDR will now require DisplayHDR 600

The folks at PC Perspective conducted an interesting interview with AMD, during which a company representative discussed the impending changes to AMD's FreeSync program. Essentially, the company found that there is some confusion among consumers regarding the features FreeSync 2 offers exactly compared to the first generation. That is why they are going to rename it to FreeSync 2 HDR, which transmits the focus on the new set of functions: LFC (Low Framerate Compensation) and the fast channel FreeSync 2 HDR for improvements in tone mapping.

AMD also clarified what are the necessary specifications for a monitor to receive FreeSync 2 HDR certification: compatibility with at least HDR600, coverage of 99% of BT.709 and 90% of the DCI P3 color spectrum. A minimum response time was also mentioned, although the exact value of this number is unknown. An interesting point that can be deduced from AMD's change is that this is more than just cosmetic: AMD's first FreeSync 2 certification program required displays to have at least HDR400.

AMD intends a stricter control of the standards with "FreeSync 2 HDR", demonstrating that HDR400 is not the true HDR that they claim, so manufacturers are going to have to improve this section if they want to obtain the precious new AMD certification in next screens that we see during this year and the next.
