This year 2016 is being much better for AMD than last 2015 and the end of 2014, a period in which it lost a large amount of market share in graphics cards in favor of its eternal rival Nvidia. Finally AMD has managed to start getting out of the doldrums and has already accumulated two consecutive quarters gaining market share.

AMD continues to cut market share to Nvidia with Polaris announcement

Undoubtedly, the announcement of the Polaris architecture and the adjusted prices of the graphics cards based on it has done a lot of good for an AMD that has seen how the sale of its graphics cards has increased by 7.2% compared to the previous quarter to reach a 29.9% market share. This means that Nvidia's market share has dropped 7.2% to 70.1%. However, these data were collected after the announcement of the new Polaris cards, although they were not yet on sale, we will have to wait until the next quarter to see if sales have been positive or if, on the contrary, they lose market share again. With these data it is seen that AMD has managed to improve its market share in graphics cards for desktop by 9% in just half a year.

Seller Desktop GPU Share Q4 2015 Desktop GPU Share Q1 2016 Desktop GPU Share Q2 2016
AMD 20.9% 22.7% (+1.8) 29.9% (+7.2)
Nvidia 79.1% 77.3% (-1.8) 70.1% (-7.2)

We now focus on the market for portable graphics cards and we see that AMD has also had a growth although much more modest, specifically it has managed to increase its presence by 4.2% to reach a share of 34.2% compared to 65.8%. Currently it has its rival Nvidia.

Seller Discrete GPU Share Q4 2015 Discrete GPU Share Q1 2016 Discrete GPU Share Q2 2016
AMD 26.2% 29.4% (+3.2) 34.2% (+4.2)
Nvidia 73.8% 70.6% (-3.2) 65.8% (-4.2)

The future could be even brighter for an AMD that is finalizing the details of its high-performance Vega graphics architecture and its new Summit Ridge processors based on the hopeful Zen microarchitecture. Let's hope that Sunnyvale's do not disappoint us and give us great options to choose from when designing a new PC.
