A new report from Digitimes predicts that AMD will continue its momentum in the desktop CPU market until the end of 2018, at which time it will have a market share of up to 30% globally according to its correspondents.

AMD can relive a golden age thanks to Zen

Anonymous industry sources say AMD has dramatically changed its foundry strategy, loosening ties with Globalfoundries and hiring TSMC to manufacture its GPUs, servers and PC processors in a 7nm process. The policy change has raised AMD's stock prices, amid market expectations for better chip rates and yields, as well as more shipments to customers.

Intel's issues with the 14nm process node are no secret, let alone the troublesome transition to the 10nm process, which further helps the AMD case. The report further states that board partners, including Asus, MSI, and Gigabyte, increased production and shipments of devices equipped with AMD processors, raising the processor manufacturer's share to more than 20% in the third quarter of 2018, it is very likely that the figure will bounce back to the 30% level again.

All of this, in addition to EPYC's recently announced implementation contracts with Cisco and HPE, which can make that 30% even more plausible. It remains to be seen what the following months await for Intel and AMD in the desktop processor market, but it cannot be denied that things have changed a lot since the beginning of 2018, and that is always good for the consumer.
