After introducing you this week a good wave of X299 motherboards and Skylake-X processor it is time to change the chip a bit. Specifically, we bring you the review of the interesting AORUS Radeon RX 580 XTR 8G that comes to the market with a brutal design and perfect power for those users who are looking for stability in Full HD and 1440p resolutions.

Are you ready? Ready? Let's start!

We thank Gigabyte Aorus for trusting us with the product for its review:

AORUS Radeon RX 580 XTR 8G technical features

Unboxing and design

Aorus makes a presentation to us in a standard size cardboard box. On the cover we can see the Aorus falcon logo and that it is the 8GB GDDR5 model. Among its benefits, it tells us that it has an RGB system, uses the Windforce heatsink and it is a "vitamin" edition, that is, with an overclock.

Once we open the box we find the following bundle:

  • AORUS Radeon RX 580 XTR 8G.CD with installation drivers. Stickers. Two ROG cable pickers. Quick guide.

This new card is positioned in the most powerful of the Radeon RX 500 series. It has a Polaris 20 core made up of a total of 33 Compute Units (CU) that add up to no less than 2304 stream processors, 144 TMUs and 32 ROPs at one frequency maximum on the 1340 MHz card. With these characteristics, the Ellesmere core is capable of offering maximum power greater than 6.17 TFLOPs, so it is perfect for virtual reality games.

The AORUS Radeon RX 580 XTR 8G can only be found in a single model of 8GB of GDDR5 memory at frequencies of 8000 MHz and with a 256-bit interface . Its bandwidth amounts to 224 GB / s. While the reference clock base frequency is 1340 MHz, this factory-accelerated graphics card is up to 1425 MHz in its Gaming mode or 1439 MHz in its overclock mode.

It has dimensions of 27.5 x 13.3 x 5.4 cm, making it a fairly heavy card given its dimensions.

View of the rear backplate of the graphics card.

The AORUS Radeon RX 580 XTR 8G incorporates the new Windforce X2 heatsink equipped with two 100 mm double ball fans in its structure and that unlike the rest rotate in opposite directions to maximize the generated air flow. It is also interesting to know that it incorporates 3D-Active Fan technology that keeps the fans stopped at rest and only activates when the load on the graphics card begins. A luxury!

As we have seen in models analyzed previously, it incorporates a larger cooling surface, making the air flow more direct and less spread to the aluminum grill with 23% greater efficiency.

This heatsink occupies 2.5 expansion slots in our system so we must pay special attention before installing it in a 2-Way or 3-Way CrossFireX configuration.

As a good graphics card it needs a suitable supply. Specifically, two 8-pin and 6-pin connectors, so that their overclocking potential is not limited by the lack of power.

Aorus has taken RGB lighting very seriously and has 3 backlit areas: front , upper logo lettering and the " Fan Stop ". It allows us to choose between 5 profiles: Cycle, consistent, flash, double flash and brightness. All of them can be managed from your software.

Among its rear connections we find:

  • One DVIT connection Three DisplayPort 1.4 connections One HDMI 2.0 connection.

PCB and internal components

To remove the heatsink from the PCB is as simple as removing the four screws from the rear area and two that are hooked to the power phases. Once removed we realize that it includes a large block of aluminum fins that aim to keep all the components and the graphics core of the graphics card cool.

It has a total of 4 nickel-plated copper heatpipes and one of the most powerful heatsinks Gigabyte has to offer. The metallic structure that cools the memories and the thick thermal pad already tell us that this graphics card will be cool.

Speaking of VRM we find a 6 + 2 phase supply design with Ultra Durable components offering greater durability and reliability in excessively demanding environments. Great job Aorus!

All tests have been passed with the filters to the maximum unless we indicate otherwise. In order to have adequate performance, we have carried out three types of tests: the first is the most common at Full HD 1920 x 1080, the second resolution is making the leap to 2K or 1440P (2560 x 1440P) gamers and the most enthusiastic with 4K (3840 x 2160). The operating system we have used has been Windows 10 Pro 64 bit and the latest drivers available from the AMD website.

What are we looking for in the tests?

First, the best possible image quality. The most important value for us is the average FPS (Frames per second), the higher the number of FPS the more fluid the game will go. To differentiate the quality a bit, we leave you a table to assess the quality in FPS, but we will also have the minimum Fps in the tests that were thus possible:

FRAMES BY SECONDS

Frames for Seconds. (FPS)

Gameplay

Less than 30 FPS Limited
30 - 40 FPS Playable
40 - 60 FPS Good
Greater than 60 FPS Fairly Good or Excellent

Synthetic benchmarks

On this occasion, we have reduced it to several very specific tests, since we consider that they are more than sufficient as synthetic performance tests.

  • 3DMARK Fire Strike.3DMARK Fire Strike Ultra.Time SpyHeaven Superposition

Game Testing

We have decided to make the leap to checking various games manually. The reason? Very simple, we want to give a much more realistic vision and cover tests with current games. Since we make an effort, it is consistent with the level of the website and that of our readers.

Overclocking

Note: Remember that overclocking or manipulation carries a risk, we and any manufacturer are not responsible for improper use, use the head and always do so at your own risk.

The graphics card is very uploaded and we have been able to go up to 1440 MHz, it is not a brutal improvement but it is the maximum it offers. That is to say, it already brings it to the limit of series, basically because the chip cannot cope.

Temperature and consumption

The temperatures of the AORUS Radeon RX580 XTR 8G have been very good. At rest we have obtained 28ºC while playing we do not exceed 70ºC in any case. Since the overclock has been so low, there are hardly any differences

Another of the great advantages of this range is the reduced consumption that we have in the equipment. Until very recently it was unthinkable to have high-end graphics and get 68 W at rest and 299 W playing with an Intel i7-7740X processor. While with overclock we keep 68 W at rest and 305 W at maximum performance.

Final words and conclusion about AORUS Radeon RX 580 XTR 8G

So far the AORUS Radeon RX 580 XTR 8G is one of the best AMD Polaris graphics cards we've tested. And it has all the ingredients to succeed: almost overclocked, top-notch components, an impressive heatsink and above all effective and a very good lighting system.

In our test bench we have been able to test it with one of the new i7 of the X299 platform. The results are magnificent and the AORUS Radeon RX 580 XTR 8G becomes a very tough rival for any competitor.

Currently we consider it ideal for Full HD and 2K resolutions, although 4K defends the experience is not so optimal. For the most demanding resolution we will have to wait for the new AMD RX VEGA. Looking forward to it?

We found two problems and both are foreign to Gigabyte. The new RX 570 and RX 580 series are marked "refried" that consume more consumption and are coming overclocked. And the second is the price of about 330 euros. Cheap or expensive? It seems normal to us compared to the Nvidia GTX 1060, but now with the upward trend of cryptocurrencies some stores have lost their pen with prices.

In short, if you are looking for the best RX 580, possibly the Aorus RX 580 is among the best two. A 100% recommended purchase.
