There's also a very aggressive gaming design and customizable RGB lighting. Ready to see our analysis? Here we go!

First of all, we thank Aorus for the trust placed in us when transferring the product to us for analysis.

AORUS RTX 2080 Xtreme technical features

Unboxing and design

AORUS RTX 2080 Xtreme comes in a very large cardboard package, it is larger than all other RTX 20 series cards that we have reviewed. The front has a large “GeForce RTX” brand logo along with the “AORUS” logo in the upper left corner and the “AORUS Xtreme” series logo in the center.

Packaging has put a huge emphasis on RTX, followed by GDDR6 memory, DirectX 12, and Ansel support. The back of the box is very typical, highlighting the main characteristics and specifications of the cards.

Inside the box is another box that has a dotted texture and a reflective AORUS logo in the middle. AORUS definitely goes with the most premium look with this product. The graphics card and accessory pack are securely held in foam packaging.

The card comes with some accessories and manuals. Below is the list of all accessories included in the package:

  • AORUS RTX 2080 Xtreme. AORUS metal sticker Quick guide 4 year warranty registration Driver I / O CD Driver support not to bend the graphics card

The card is well wrapped within an antistatic cover to prevent unwanted static discharge on various surfaces that could damage the graphics card.

AORUS RTX 2080 Xtreme uses the new Windforce design, which is a refinement and modern version of the Windforce 3X solution. The card measures 290 x 134.31 x 59.9 mm and occupies two slots within a chassis, making it easy to install. You should consider height when opting for a dual card solution as the combination of PCIe slots on your motherboard or box may not allow such a configuration.

In terms of design, we are seeing an updated version of the Windforce series cover that offers great aesthetics over previous models. The new design is more futuristic and better suited to gaming fashion. The center cover houses a small Falcon logo that illuminates the RGB lighting when powered on.

The back of the card features a solid backplate that looks stunning and offers a premium look. This backplate helps improve rigidity and aesthetics, while protecting the delicate components of this part of the PCB. There are cutouts at the screw locations to easily reach the points on the graphics card. There are also open vents for hot air to escape from the back. AORUS also uses thermal pads under the back plate that offer more cooling to the PCB's electrical circuit.

The card features three 100mm fans that provide increased airflow and smooth operation. The key feature of the fans is that they adopt an alternate twist design, as the standard twist leads to turbulent airflow within the card, leaving less room for hot air to disperse.

With this alternative spinning technique, the center fan rotates clockwise, while the two fans on the side rotate counter-clockwise, allowing for better heat dissipation.

This also increases air flow pressure, keeping the heatsink lower under intense gaming workloads. All fans implement a double ball bearing design and can last for a long time while operating quietly. They also offer quiet operation compared to standard fans.

AORUS also features its 3D Active Fan technology in the Windforce heatsink. This feature will not spin the fans on the card unless they reach a certain threshold. In the case of Windforce heatsink, that limit is set at 60 ° C.

AORUS RTX 2080 Xtreme comes with a single NVLINK connector that enables bi-directional multi-GPU functionality. The RTX 2080 Ti and RTX 2080 are the only cards that support NVLINK connectivity. Only these cards have enough bandwidth that it can lead to another GPU of its level, as any of the following would not have the ability to interface with the other card. A single NVLINK x8 channel provides a maximum bandwidth of 25 GB / s. The TU102 GPU features 50GB / s of parallel bandwidth and 100GB / bidirectional bandwidth. Using NVLINK on high-end cards will be beneficial in high-resolution gaming.

The AORUS RTX 2080 Xtreme features a total of 7 video outputs. These include the following:

  • Three HDMITriple connections DisplayPort connection AND a single USB Type-C port

Interior and PCB

With the outside of the card exposed, let's take a look at what's under the hood. The first thing that catches your eye is the huge stack of fins that is part of the heat sink. The large stack of fins extends from the front and rear of the PCB and is so thick that you can barely see through it. It also comes with the angled fin design that deviates from traditional fin design and can offer better cooling on graphics cards as hungry as the GeForce RTX 2080.

AORUS is also using the direct contact base of the heatpipes, which now covers the GPU, MOSFETs and VRAM. Direct contact with heatpipes instead of using a cold plate should theoretically be the best method to transfer heat from the GPU array. The AORUS GeForce RTX 2080 Xtreme comes with an out-of-box factory overclocking. As such, it uses a dual 8-pin connector configuration.

The PCB uses ULTRA DURABLE certified components, an aerospace grade PCB coating designed to prevent moisture, dust and corrosion, and fully automated production processes. AORUS RTX 2080 Xtreme makes use of a 12 + 2 phase PCB layout. In terms of clock speeds, the graphics card has a base frequency of 1, 515 MHz, but turbo mode has a speed of 1890 MHz. Its 8 GB of GDDR6 memory with a 256-bit interface are also slightly overclocked at 14140 MHz. This card mounts the TU104 core, consisting of no less than 2944 CUDA Cores, 184 TMUs, and 64 ROPs. To all this we must add 64 RT cores and 368 Tensor Core.

AORUS GeForce RTX 20 Xtreme series cards use their RGB Fusion technology to provide you with a visually pleasing lighting experience. The fans are integrated with an LED strip that provides an incredible spiral RGB effect, while the side logo and back plate logo are also fully illuminated with RGB LEDs. You can fully customize RGB lights to your preferences using the Gigabyte RGB Fusion app.

For benchmarks we will use the following titles:

  • 3DMark Fire Strike normal. 3Mark Fire Strike 4K version. Time Spy.VRMARK.

All tests have been passed with the filters to the maximum unless we indicate otherwise. In order to have adequate performance, we have carried out three types of tests: the first is the most common at Full HD 1920 x 1080, the second resolution is making the leap for 2K or 1440P (2560 x 1440P) gamers and the enthusiastic 4K. The operating system we have used has been Windows 10 Pro 64 bit and the latest drivers available from the Nvidia website.

What are we looking for in the tests?

First, the best possible image quality. The most important value for us is the average FPS (Frames per second), the higher the number of FPS the more fluid the game will go. To differentiate the quality a bit, we leave you a table to assess the quality in FPS, but we will also have the minimum Fps in the tests that were thus possible:

FRAMES BY SECONDS

Frames for Seconds. (FPS)

Gameplay

Less than 30 FPS Limited
30 ~ 40 FPS Playable
40 ~ 60 FPS Good
Greater than 60 FPS Fairly Good or Excellent

Game Testing

We have decided to make the leap to checking various games manually. The reason? Very simple, we want to give a much more realistic vision and cover tests with current games.

Temperatures and consumption

Temperatures are quite good with 44ºC at rest, with the fans stopped, and at maximum performance it rises to 72ºC. With a frequency higher than the reference model and with slightly higher performance.

We also passed our new thermal camera to maximum performance. Obtaining very good temperatures and perfectly controlling the critical areas: VRM, core and power connections. Good job Aorus! ?

Consumption is for the entire team *

On paper it has a consumption very similar to the reference model. That speaks well enough, due to its more powerful design and a cooling system that consumes a tad more, but is more efficient under low load, being ultra-quiet.

Final words and conclusion about AORUS RTX 2080 Xtreme

Aorus continues to show us why his Xtreme line is on the crest of the wave. The AORUS RTX 2080 Xtreme is one of the best RTX series graphics cards we have tested. Your design, performance and dissipation are top notch.

It has a custom PCB that shields us with a total of 12 + 2 power phases and ultra-durable components. We have been able to see that overclocking suits him and is capable of offering the maximum that the graphics chip can give.

Much of this improvement is found with a heatsink with three fans and very thick. Temperatures and consumption have been very good. Good job Aorus!

We recommend reading What graphic card do I buy?

Currently we find it for a price of 969.90 euros in the main Spanish stores.
