We thank Gigabyte Aorus for trusting us with the product for its review:

Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080 Ti Xtreme technical features

Design and unboxing

Gigabyte makes a gala presentation with a standard size box format and that combines the colors black and orange on its cover. Among its certifications we find its compatibility with virtual reality, Ansel and DirectX 12.

In the rear area we find all the most important detailed technical specifications. All very complete and very encouraging before starting the review.

Once we open the box we find the following bundle:

  • Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080 Ti Xtreme.CD with driver and software. Quick guide. SATA thief for two PCI power connections.

The Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080 Ti Xtreme graphics card uses the most powerful chip of the moment: Pascal GP102 which It is manufactured in 16 nm FinFET and with a reduced size of 314 mm2. It is a chip that incorporates a total of 3, 584 CUDA cores in the top-of-the-range version.

It is complemented by a total of 224 texturing units (TMUs) and 88 crawling units (ROPs). The Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080 Ti Xtreme works at frequencies on its 1, 632 MHz GPU in base mode that goes up to 1, 741 MHz under Turbo Boost 3.0 for spectacular performance.

Like its younger sister, it incorporates the new GDDR5X memory, which although it does not measure up to the powerful HBM… But the problem is the same as with the GTX 1080, manufacturing costs and few chips will make it reach the next generation. The memories run at a frequency of 1376 (5555 effective MHZ) and we can go up to 1550 MHz without too much difficulty. In total, it has 11 GB GDDR5X with a 352 bit bus interface, which combining it are more than enough to play in fully stable 4K UHD resolutions.

As expected the Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080 Ti Xtreme with three double ball 100mm fans in its structure. Unlike other models, incorporating 30 cm of cooling allows the air flow to be more direct and less spread to the aluminum grill.

Its dimensions are 29.3 x 14.2 x 5.5 mm and it has an important weight. It also has the " Fan Stop " functionality, that is, it offers 0DB in noise, which means that all the fans are at rest, until the 3D load starts, which are automatically activated.

As you can see the graphics card has a monstrous size. Specifically we need 3 SLOTS to have it installed in our box.

Special mention for the copper block ! This is in charge of cooling one of the hottest areas of the graphics card: the back area of the Pascal chip. According to our tests with respect to other graphics cards, the Pascal chip drops by about 2 to 4ºC .

It also includes the customizable RGB Fusion lighting system with 16.8 million colors. It allows us to configure effects and many options within your software. Both the front of the graphics card and the back, top and backplate (logo area) illuminate.

Connectors for the SLI HB bridge.

As we can see, it incorporates two 8 + 8-pin PCI Express connections to give a good power supply to the graphics card.

Finally, we detail the rear connections made up of:

  • 1 DVI connection. 3 DisPlayPORT connections. 2 HDMI connections + 1 connection on the other side of the PCB to use VR Link technology.

PCB and some details to consider

To remove the heatsink we must remove four screws located on the chip and three other screws located in the power supply phases. This is the view of the heatsink, as we see incorporates 5 copper heatpipes, quality thermal pad and a copper surface to cool both the chip and the memories.

As you can see the PCB is a masterpiece.

The Gigabyte GTX 1080 Xtreme Gaming features a custom PCB with 1 2 + 2 power phases and Ultra Durable components. It also has Xtreme Protection technology, what is it for? It is amazing, because it supports dust, insects, greater heating, a leak of water in our liquid cooling and corrosion.

Test bench and performance tests

For benchmarks we will use the following titles:

  • 3DMark Fire Strike normal.3DMark Fire Strike version 4K.Heaven 4.0.Doom 4.Overwatch.Tomb Raider.Battlefield 4.

All tests have been passed with the filters to the maximum unless we indicate otherwise. In order to have adequate performance, we have carried out three types of tests: the first is the most common at Full HD 1920 x 1080, the second resolution is making the leap to 2K or 1440P (2560 x 1440P) gamers and the most enthusiastic with 4K (3840 x 2160). The operating system we have used has been Windows 10 Pro 64 bit and the latest drivers available from the Nvidia website.

What are we looking for in the tests?

First, the best possible image quality. The most important value for us is the average FPS (Frames per second), the higher the number of FPS the more fluid the game will go. To differentiate the quality a bit, we leave you a table to assess the quality in FPS, but we will also have the minimum Fps in the tests that were thus possible:

FRAMES BY SECONDS

Frames for Seconds. (FPS)

Gameplay

Less than 30 FPS Limited
30 - 40 FPS Playable
40 - 60 FPS Good
Greater than 60 FPS Fairly Good or Excellent

Synthetic benchmarks

On this occasion, we have reduced it to several very specific tests, since we consider that they are more than sufficient as synthetic performance tests.

  • Haven Benchmark 4.0.3DMARK Fire Strike.3DMARK Fire Strike Ultra.3DMARK VRMark.

Game Testing

We have decided to make the leap to checking various games manually. The reason? Very simple, we want to give a much more realistic vision and cover tests with current games. Since we make an effort, it is consistent with the level of the website and that of our readers.

Testing in Full HD games: 1920 x 1080

Tests in 2K games: 2560 x 1440

4K UHD gaming testing: 3840 x 2160

Overclocking

Note: Remember that overclocking or manipulation carries a risk, we and any manufacturer are not responsible for improper use, use the head and always do so at your own risk.

Serial comes quite up, exactly up to 2015 MHz. We have decided to do the maximum overclock that allows us to series in +17 MHz in the core to the Aorus GTX 1080 Ti Xtreme, leaving a maximum of 2054 MHz and the memories at 1485 MHz.

Does it go up a little? Yes, but it is that we are reaching the limit of 2.1 GHz, which is where they are all arriving. What is the improvement? After our tests just 1-2 FPS so it is not a brutal improvement either. As it comes standard it is more than enough to work with any game to the fullest.

Temperature and consumption

The temperatures of the Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080 Ti Xtreme could not have been better. At rest we have obtained 41ºC since the fans are in passive mode until some game is activated and the temperature rises. While playing we do not exceed 64º C in any case.

Another of the great advantages of this range is the reduced consumption that we have in the equipment. Until very recently it was unthinkable to have a high-end graphics and get 64 W at rest and 340 W playing with an Intel i7-7700K processor. While overclocked it goes up to 73 W at rest and 375 W at maximum performance.

Final words and conclusion about Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080 Ti Xtreme

The Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080 Ti Xtreme is one of the best graphics cards on the market for both its power and its power dissipation.

After checking its performance, we can say that it is a true all-rounder and that thanks to its triple slot heatsink it is one of the coolest and quietest we have ever tested. In addition to having VR-Link technology that allows us to connect HTC Vive glasses on the front (if we purchase the panel separately).

It is currently in Spanish stores for a price of 849 euros. Taking into account that the reference model is worth 799 euros , it seems to us a great investment. Since we improved in dissipation and one of the best PCBs that have been seen in years.
