Integrated liquid cooling systems, which we commonly call “all in one”, come in all kinds and colors, making it quite difficult for manufacturers to position their new products.

The new Arctic Freezer 240 is committed to a combination of interesting features, which you will discover in this review, a large cooling capacity and outstanding compatibility that will allow us to mount it on any processor on the market.

The radiator

This is an all-integrated system that requires no maintenance, so the 240mm radiator has no way of maintaining it without damaging any of the watertight fittings that are connected to its liquid inlet and outlet. It is a low permeability system that will allow us years of use without the need for maintenance.

The radiator has a classic design of flat tubes connected to each other by thin aluminum slats forming an "S". This type of design dramatically increases the heat exchange surface while allowing a high flow of air between the sheets, essential for the proper cooling of the refrigerant.

The Freezer 240 radiator has dimensions of 272 x 120 x 38 mm, completely made of aluminum and finished in black with a powder paint primer through the use of electrostatic guns. We certainly liked the painting method a lot, which leaves a high-quality finish throughout the radiator.

The liquid inlets have been through 6 mm fittings with watertight closure and without the possibility of manipulation by the user. It is a closed system designed to reduce evaporation and not so that the user can modularize it.

The exchange block with integrated pump

The Freezer 240 system is surely the most economical example of a closed system with second generation Asetek technology on the market, it does not reach 90 Euros and it has the system that has given life to some of the best systems of recent times, which is also Compatible with all processors on the market, including the AMD Threadripper TR4, which as standard have the proper anchor for the circular closure of this block.

The block integrates a variable voltage pump between 5-12v and that in our tests develops up to 5000 rpm of rotation speed. The copper block has a micro-channel design and is closed by 8 screws located at the base itself.

The set is compact and at its normal working speeds produces less than 35dBA of noise, it is not the quietest pump I have been lucky enough to test, but it will not be a problem on a day to day basis.

Arctic includes all the accessories necessary to mount this block on any modern and past processor and with a cooling capacity of up to 300w, it is suitable for any processor that we can find in the domestic and professional market. It has no mounting limitation, on any past and present processor for both AMD and Intel. This includes AM4, TR4, LGA1151, LGA2011 and LGA2066 processors.

Mounting is easy for all processors, and for sockets without rear support, Arctic adds a support spider that is also easy to install. Expert hands will take longer to screw the four fans than to fix the assembly to the box and processor.

Arctic adds for the assembly a small envelope of thermal paste MX-4 of its own use. It is enough for a couple of applications, although being an envelope the truth is that I do not think that we can maintain the quality of this for a certain time, we miss a syringe with more quantity that we can take advantage of on more occasions.

Tubes

Arctic has used 240 polyamide (nylon) tubes with 10.6mm outer diameter and 6mm inner diameter in the Freezer, which leaves us 2.3mm of wall reinforced by metal mesh. This type of flexible tube is practically impossible to clamp, they always maintain their internal diameter and have a low permeability, which is enhanced by the black color (which rejects more light), allowing us to have less maintenance requirements.

The tubes have a length of 326 mm, they are somewhat scarce, so it is not a kit that we can position anywhere in a large semi-tower box. It is more thought for installation in the upper area of ​​the box or, as some models allow, on the support plate of the base plate. If we want to go further, we will have a difficult time.

Fans

One of the virtues of this kit is that, for its very contained price, it offers us four fans. Placed in a “push and pull” configuration (two fans bring in air, the other two take out) they generate enough air flow inside the radiator to dissipate up to 350w of heat, being optimized, according to the manufacturer, for up to 300w of consumption.

There are four 120mm diameter fans with a lubricant immersed bearing where the shaft is centered by means of a bearing system that rests on a Teflon surface with the entire assembly submerged in a lubricant chamber that reduces friction and wear of the assembly. It also improves the sound behavior of the engine at high revs.

These fans have a PWM system and can be regulated between 500 and 1350rpm. At maximum speed they generate about 35dBA of noise (with all four working in unison), according to our measurements. They lack "silentblocks" in the fixing holes, which is a snag, but they have a "Y" cable that allows us to concatenate with each other to simplify installation.

Its very low starting frequencies and its limited maximum speed allow us to intuit good results at the sound level, but I do not know if these types of massive configurations really improve the cooling of an overclocked, mid-range processor. That is why we are going to thoroughly test this system in various cases.

On the whole

We have explored the different components of this system, components that are usually the usual in any modern "all-in-one" kit, but we have not talked about our feelings treating the whole as a whole.

It is a much cheaper system than the average, 90 Euros taxes included, and it also has four fans, which is rare today and also uses Asetek technology, which is one of the most famous and respected manufacturers of this type of technology.

Everything seems to stand up for this product to give us a good result in our tests. It lacks some quality details, especially in the fans and tubes, or personalized monitoring software that allows us to manage the set in detail, or perhaps for some the lack of RGB lighting capacity is also important, but on paper this set It has everything you need to succeed by combining cooling capacity, noise control and price.

We have used a Core i7-8700k processor, without any modification, with a respectable overclocking level of 5GHz and with all the standard elements of this kit, including the thermal paste that they provide us with for assembly.

Between the tests you can see results with and without overclocking, with two or four fans and different frequencies of use of these. In each case we have performed noise tests and the temperature measurements are after 30 minutes of CPU stress.

As you can see the difference between using two or four fans is obvious, for better and for worse, it improves the temperature by several degrees, and that is certainly interesting, but it also increases the noise by several decibels and taking this into account perhaps it is more Balanced that works with two fans with processors that its TDP does not exceed 100w.

With AMD's LGA2066 or TR4 socket models, which easily exceed 130w, it will be important to use all four fans to maintain acceptable overclocking levels.

Arctic currently has the cheapest Asetek based cooling system and 240mm radiator on the market. Its competition usually exceeds 100 Euros in similar configurations.

It is a system that has clearly demonstrated its cooling capacity and has a balanced operation, well controlled in noise despite having four 120mm fans. This difference is also important because we rarely find kits that come standard with the four fans to configure a "push and pull" system that takes advantage of the full potential of the radiator.

Even so, we have not found, at least with our test processor, great differences with the use of two or four fans. This finding can give us to understand why it is rare to see four series fans in this type of system. If we use processors with more consumption, with more overclocking, they will surely come in handy, but that falls within our personal assumptions based on our previous experiences with other liquid cooling assemblies.

It is a good system, but it also lacks some characteristics that we find in more elaborate kits. I am referring, for example, to the integrated “silentblocks”, user configurable system or RGB lighting.

Even with these deficiencies, which we see in the most modern systems, this is undoubtedly a very interesting liquid refrigeration kit since it offers us levels of quality superior to the most economical offers, but maintains a perfectly acceptable price.
