ARM is increasing its bid to become a major player in the world of autonomous vehicles, with the launch of its new ARM Cortex-A65AE microprocessor, created to handle multiple data streams.
ARM Cortex-A65AE, this is the new core
The new ARM Cortex-A65AE chip will be available in 2020. The idea with the new chip is to help process the many separate data streams that automated vehicles are expected to produce more efficiently, to help them navigate the roads more safely.

ARM Cortex-A65AE is based on ARM's “Split-Lock” technology, which adds multi-threading capability that allows workloads to be divided among the processing cores on the chip. Alternatively, if security is a primary concern, the chip can lock the cores to perform the same operations simultaneously and recheck the work of the chip, minimizing the possibility of errors.
Arm says the Cortex-A65AE will help connected vehicles more efficiently manage the myriad of sensors needed to help them drive autonomously. Numerous sensors will be needed to help these vehicles monitor their surroundings, including cameras, LiDAR, and radar, which means a huge increase in performance and the computational requirements necessary to process that data securely.
ARM said the Cortex-A65AE will also be able to help monitor human drivers in non-autonomous vehicles. The chip can be used to process data from sensors in the car, which are used to monitor the movement of the eyelids in drivers to detect fatigue. There may also be sensors used to monitor the driver's body temperature, vital signs, and behavior patterns, helping to personalize his experience in the vehicle.
In addition to the multiple processing and security functions, the Cortex-A65AE can also be connected to graphics processing units built by companies like Nvidia, which provide even greater processing power. ARM did not provide any performance specs for the Cortex A65AE, other than saying it has 3.5 times the performance of its previous generation Cortex-A53 chip.
