ASMedia is working on the final stage of development of the advanced ASMedia ASM2824 PCI-Express gen 3.0 x24 switch. The new ASMedia ASM2824 PCI-Express gen 3.0 x24 chip enables motherboard manufacturers to create four downstream 8-line PCIe 3.0 x4 M.2 PCIe slots from the Intel Z390 chipset, saving the remaining PCIe lanes for the built-in USB 3.1 controllers. ASMedia promises thanks to the four downstream slots to achieve NVID RAID bandwidths of up to 6, 500 MB / s, even crossing 6, 700 MB / s.

The test platform is believed to have had the ASMedia ASM2824 PCI-Express gen 3.0 x24 connected to the complex PCIe root of the CPU, and not to that of the chipset. Intel has yet to modernize its outdated DMI 3.0 chipset-bus between its latest processors and the chipset, which is physically PCI-Express 3.0 x4 and is outdated for this generation's high-bandwidth interfaces.

The ASMedia ASM2824 also offers great potential on the AMD AM4 platform, which not only has the same PCI-Express 3.0 x4 chipset bus between the AM4 SoC SoC and the X470 chipset, but also a set of only 8 PCI Express 2.0 lanes. Motherboard designers can tie all of those lanes to one ASM2824 to create up to 24 downstream lanes.
