The Astro C40, a gamepad with a scandal presentation and with many configuration options, falls into our hands. Let's see it!

Unboxing of the Astro C40

Firstly, the presentation of the Astro C40 has a fine satin cardboard cover. The first thing that will catch your attention is the Play Station 4 Official License certificate. The use for PS4 and Windows is also observable under the model (although it is also possible to connect it to MacOS computers with the use of software). Likewise, the ability to exchange modules is highlighted at the foot along with use with and without cable.

On the back is where we can see in effect how its modules can be alternated depending on our preferences as well as other outstanding features:

  • Configuration software C40 TR Integrated rear buttons Rear triggers Wireless audio More than 12h of autonomy Travel bag included

All this is presented with an infographic scheme where we can see all the components and moving parts of the Astro C40.

When removing this cover, a box-type box is finally revealed with a schematic view of the controls on the remote.

Then, when removing the side cover is when we receive the travel cover. This has a fabric covering and semi-rigid structure. Along with it we also have several user manuals and various documentation.

Finally we open the zipper and here is the Astro C40 firmly embedded in the internal structure of the case. On the cover we have a braided mesh in which is the USB cable for use and charging the battery with a length of 2m.

Taking out the gamepad reveals the additional components included in the travel bag. These come embedded in a rigid rubber structure in which there are still free spaces. This is because the Astro C40, being planned as a customizable remote, allows you to buy separate pieces to add them to our collection.

The total contents of the box are summarized in:

  • Manuals & Documentation Astro C40 Travel Case Charging Cable USB Receiver C40 Tool Set of 2 Joystick Replacements

Astro C40 design

The Astro C40 is a good-sized remote, with measurements of 168 x 108 x 53 mm. The material that covers its structure in all fastening areas is matte black rubber, featuring serigraphs in dark gray and red. The center piece for the controls is also made of plastic, in this case a more rigid material with a two-way fluted pattern. In this piece we can see the four screws that allow us to remove it and redistribute the buttons as we please. Just above it is also the PS4 touchpad and two auxiliary buttons. Also visible at its base is the 3.5 audio jack and headphone microphone input.

Regarding the available buttons, the main ones found on the cover are:

  • Two joysticks Directional crosshead Four button panel PS button (Play Station) Select and Start Touchpad (Play Station)

The materials used in each switch varies according to the type:

  • The joysticks have a rubber coating on their top cover and feature a grainy texture for easy grip. The directional crosshead is made of stainless steel and has the four arrows serigraphed, highlighting the upper one in red compared to its gray twins. The Play Station button is embossed with the company logo in a shiny finish. The group of four action buttons is made of plastic with a slightly rough touch, presenting the geometric silkscreen-printed in red. The Play Station touchpad and the two buttons that guard it on both sides are made of the same material. It is on the touchpad where we can see the Astro logo stamped as well as the presence of the activity LED.

In the rear area we find:

  • LB, LT and RB, RT (triggers) Switch for wired and wireless connection Profile changeover switch (1 or 2)

The Type B and T buttons feature the same material and texture as the four-button set seen on the cover of the hand, while the switches are instead red-stained steel. This is also where we have the nano USB connection port for the charging cable.

Finally, on the reverse the command are:

  • UR and UL (rear buttons) Opening the chassis Profiling button

In this section we can appreciate the striated texture that both fasteners of the Astro C40 trace from its birth on both sides, providing an excellent grip for the user. Just in the central area, the serial number, manufacturer, model and some quality certificates such as the European one are observable.

The charging cable that comes with the Astro C40 is not twisted, but it has a considerable length of two meters and its rubberized coating makes it a thick and resistant cable. Both USB ports have rubber reinforcements.

Putting the Astro C40 into use

We enter the mess, and it is that here it is not only interesting that it is beautiful but that it goes like silk. What did we think of the star? Well, here we will start with latency and then we will continue with the other aspects.

The good gamer has always feared (and hated) latency (lag) in games. Whether on a multiplayer server or the game in question is going to pedal in our operating system, the experience is horrible when it comes from an external source. Now, what about the latency of our wireless controller? Here peripherals have been used with cable until more recent generations and the technology has not stopped improving, so… How good is the Astro C40 compared to heavyweights?

  • Dualshock 4 (Play Station): 10ms XBox One Controller : 6.9ms Astro C40: 5ms

The Astro C40's impressive five millisecond mark is second only to Dualshock 4 Bluetooth, at 2.8ms.

With a good team (for PC gamers) or our console, the gaming experience is excellent when it comes to the response and latency capabilities of the Astro C40. Wireless connectivity ensures a range of about ten meters, allowing us to enjoy the game from our sofa.

Also talking about autonomy, the Astro C40 offers about twelve hours of use. Its LED on the cover informs us of the state of the low battery and if necessary we can always go from wireless to cable game just by changing the connection mode.

Continuing with the juicy aspects of the command, there is something that nobody will question: it is flexible until saying enough. Do you like an XBox-like button layout? No problem. More of Play Station, with its symmetrical joysticks? Ahead. Are you a free spirit and do you like to ride it on your roll? Do not cut yourself.

The Astro C40 has the great advantage over the other controls that can be adapted to each user and playing style. Many may tell you that playing on the Play Station with an XBox display is heresy, but here we are to play at ease and be comfortable.

What can we change places? Well: both joysticks are removable just like the spider. All these pieces can be placed in the position of the others, but we must take two fundamental precautions:

  1. Follow the instructions on the position in which they must be placed: this is very important since a wrong assembly can lead to response errors or "crazy buttons" Do not overtighten the screws: applying excessive pressure when reclosing the case is not The best idea, at the moment when the case doesn't dance and the screws are fixed is enough.

The gaming experience with the Astro C40 becomes something special when you know that you can customize it in the most practical layout for you.

Ergonomics

At first contact, the Astro C40 seemed like a heavy and quite bulky controller in our girlish hands. In this aspect, its shape is closer to that of an XBox One control than to the PS4 Dualshock. It is a robust controller, yes, but it provides a lot of solidity. The type of material also helps this perception and does not leave us that feeling that sometimes occurs when we squeeze the hand with too much force as if we were going to break it with emotion in the middle of an epic battle.

After a few minutes of use we did it to him right away. We have been testing it with both Devil May Cry 5 and Dark Souls 3, and the experience has seduced us. However, for smaller hands it is true that the controls may turn out to be a bit further from each other than we would like. It is not an abysmal difference, but we like to target those details for the most demanding readers. Obviously those of you who have big hands will have no problem and you may even appreciate that additional space.

software

The icing on the cake comes to us with the Astro C40 TR Configuration Software, the gift of the house program that we can download both for PC, Mac or PS4. At first glance it may not seem like a big deal, but let us tell you.

What receives us from the beginning is a view of the command with two profile options: the one that we have for effect and a second that we can create from scratch (the first is customizable, of course).

The moment we open the profile the party begins showing us the five sections to edit:

  • Assignment: we can choose one by one each button and assign an individual command. Sticks: Regulates the sensitivity of both joysticks separately. Triggers: sets its sensitivity also individually. Audio: allows us to adjust the equalizer, microphone and volume of the headphones that we connect through the 3.5 jack of the Astro C40. Effects: graduates the control's vibration and light intensity.

Regarding the audio, here we will make a note:

For those more clueless, it may happen that when you connect your Astro C40 to the PC the sound is only reproduced through the headphone jack of the gamepad. This is because your operating system can not only detect them as a controller, but also a headphone (Astro C40). Before you get dizzy in the software options as a server, take a look at your sound settings and prioritize your speakers. This will only divert the sound when you connect headphones.

Finally, we must point out that the wireless connectivity by USB receiver can cause the Astro software to require an update.

Final words and conclusions about Astro C40

We have mixed feelings on the Astro C40. As a gamepad it seems like a great game and we love its software. The Plug & Play is always appreciated and its versatility is fantastic. It has a lot of autonomy and the detail of the accessories is a plus. On the other hand, it is priced at € 199.99.

A controller with such a budget escapes from the hands of many, and that is in our eyes its biggest flaw. Another negative aspect is that the software is available only in English, although in its defense we must say that thanks to its simple and highly visual interface, it is easy to handle for those who are least proficient in the language. We liked? Yes, very much, although the price seems a bit high to us.

Good aspects on the other hand are the solidity of its design: resistant and made to last. The interchangeable parts also make it possible to replace them in the future if any of them should break down with their use (especially the joysticks, which are always the element of a command that suffers the most). A 5ms latency and 12h autonomy make the Astro C40 a reliable gamepad at key moments, something highly valued when we are giving it our all and looking for only the best. The gaming experience with the Astro C40 becomes something special when you know that you can customize it in the most practical layout for you.
