Finding the perfect motherboard for your new AMD Ryzen processor won't be a difficult task. Therefore, in this platform launch we bring you the review of some of the most interesting on the market: Asus Crosshair VI Hero. This gorgeous features 8 digital power phases, 8 SATA connections, Nvidia SLI support and its fantastic ROG SupremeFX S1220 HD CODEC sound card. Do you want to know it in detail? Don't miss our review!

We thank Asus for trusting the product for its analysis:

Asus Crosshair VI Hero technical characteristics

Unboxing and design

The Asus Crosshair VI Hero is presented in a large box with the characteristic color of the ROG series: Red. On its cover we find the Republic of Gamers logo, in large letters the model and all the certifications that support this fantastic motherboard.

Already in the back we have all the most important technical characteristics detailed. Undoubtedly, a recommended reading before starting the unpacking.

Inside we find the following bundle

  • Asus Crosshair VI Hero motherboard. Rear hood. Instruction manual. Quick guide. CD disk with drivers. SATA cable set. Screw to connect M.2 disk. SLI HB ROG cable.

The Asus Crosshair VI Hero is an ATX format motherboard with dimensions of 30.4 cm x 22.4 cm for the AMD socket AM4. The board has a design quite similar to what we saw in other Asus Maximus Hero. A matte black color predominates on the PCB and metallic details throughout all the connections and components. The result is great!

A quick peek at the back for curious readers.

The motherboard has two zones with cooling: the main one is located in the power phases and the secondary one in the X370 chipset. As always, we have decided to remove the heatsinks to check the quality of the components.

It has a total of 8 + 4 + 2 power phases supported by Extreme Engine Digi + technology, 10K Black Metallic protection in its capacitors , MicroFine Alloy Chokes and Power Block MOSFET. All of these improvements offer better voltages, low temperatures, component longevity, and greater overclocking capabilities.

Detail of the 8 + 4-pin EPS connection and the M.2 connector for Wifi cards.

It has 4 available 64 GB compatible DDR4 RAM memory sockets with frequencies up to 3200 Mhz and compatible with the XMP 2.0 profile. Although we will see in our tests what compatibility this motherboard offers us and the new AMD Ryzen. Note that it also incorporates an internal USB 3.1 connection.

The layout is pretty good for what AMD is currently offering us with its X370 motherboards. Since it allows us to connect two Nvidia graphics cards in SLI or AMD in CrossFireX. It has a total of three PCIe 3.0 to x16 slots and three other PCIe 3.0 connections at x1 speed.

As we have already commented during the article, it incorporates the latest low cost SLI HB ROG bridge, which increases the great performance with two graphics cards.

An important fact is that this fantastic motherboard is compatible with AM3 heatsinks. That is, if you have Corsair liquid cooling (which does not have AM4 mounts at launch) you can install it without any problem. So this is great news?

It is also important to know that it incorporates a single slot for the M.2 NVMe connection to install any disk of this format and type 2242/2260/2280/22110 (42/60/80 and 110mm) with a 32GBp / s bus.

We recommend reading our article on: What is the M2 connection and what is it for?

It incorporates a sound card with SupremeFX technology with the new CODEC S1220 that isolates component interference (EMI) much faster and better. It also incorporates the best premium Nichicon capacitors, an ES9023 DAC supported by Sonic Radar III software.

Regarding storage, it has six SATA III 6 GB / s connections with RAID 0.1, 5 and 10 support.

Point out that we have a single 10/100/1000 Gigabit LAN connection signed by Intel I211-AT.

Finally, we detail the rear connections:

  • Clear BIOS button and another to switch to the second BIOS. 8 x USB 3.0 connections.4 x USB 2.0 connections.1 x Network (RJ45). 1 x USB 3.1 Type A and Type C. Audio Input / Output 7.1.

To check the stability of the Ryzen 7 1700 processor at stock speed and the motherboard we have stressed with Prime 95 Custom and air cooling. The graphics we have used is an Nvidia GTX 1080, without further delay, let's see the results obtained in our tests with a 1920 x 1080 monitor.

BIOS

The BIOS does not disappoint Asus Crosshair VI Hero and we have all the news that have been presented in recent years. It is one of the most complete we have seen, both by adjustment and motorization level.

WE RECOMMEND AMD shows the first AM4 motherboards for Ryzen

Final words and conclusion about Asus Crosshair VI Hero

The Asus Crosshair VI Hero is one of the best motherboards that we will find on the market for the AM4 platform. Its nice design, build quality, 8 + 4 + 2 power phases, support for up to 64GB of DDR4 memory, storage possibilities and its nice AURA RGB lighting system put it on top of AMD Ryzen.

In our tests we have verified both system stability in stock values and overclocking. As it is the most basic processor model: AMD Ryzen 7 1700, we have only been able to use the stock heatsink until we get the new anchors for our cooling systems. The speed achieved is 3600 MHz in all the cores and the result has been magnificent. With the Asus Crosshair VI Hero we will have no problem pushing any Ryzen 7 series processor up to 3.9 at 4 GHz.

In games the result has been quite good, not as fast as the i7-7700k that we analyzed at the beginning of the year but it is an off-road team. Also special mention to the improved sound card and the BIOS.

After talking to Asus we would like to point out the odd data about the frequencies of the memories. In our case with the XMP profile (from intel) we have 3200 MHz, but AMD has the AMP profile and it depends on the processor memory controller and the memory models in question, we can reach one frequency or another. For example, our Corsair Vengeance LED memories have reached 2666 MHz, and we have seen a quite palpable improvement compared to 2133 MHz. So we have to wait for memory manufacturers to take out memories that accept 100% these frequencies and assemble the chips You better get along with these new AMD Ryzen 7.

Its store price ranges from 295 euros, it is somewhat high, but if you want a safe value you must choose it. A 100% recommended purchase.
