Asus, a leader in the manufacture of high-performance motherboards, graphics cards, and laptops, has sent us what will be the best-selling laptop of this new generation. This is the Asus GL552J with GTX 950 graphics card, i5 or i7 Skylake processor and 8 GB of RAM.

Don't miss our review! Happy reading!

Asus GL552J technical specifications

Asus GL552J

Asus gives us a gala presentation as we are used to in the Republic of Gamer (ROG) series. The packaging used is a large cardboard box ideal for transport and arrival in our hands. The bundle is made up of:

  • Asus GL552J laptop Power cord and power supply Instruction manual A cloth to clean the screen Wiring organizer

The design of the laptop falls in love at first sight with the materials used. We find a rubbery plastic base very pleasant to the touch and in the central area there is a space that imitates brushed aluminum. The Asus GL552J has dimensions of 38.4 x 25.6 cm x 34.3 mm (width x depth x height), while its weight ranges from 2.59 kg.

In the hardware section we will highlight its 15.6 ″ LED backlit screen with FULL HD resolution 1920 x 1080 (16: 9) ultra Slim 200 nits with Anti-Glare. Beware, it is not finally IPS, although it is an improved LED… this could have been a differential point of the rest of notebooks. Pity!

In the side connections we find on the right side the classic audio input and output, a USB connection and the DVD recorder. Already on the left side, we have the D-SUB video output, HDMI, 2 USB 3.0 ports and the Gigabit network card. Finally, on the front we will only highlight the card reader.

The processor is the powerful i7-4720HQ at 2.6 Ghz and 6MB of cache, this model exactly has 12GB of DDR3 memory, a storage system with a 1TB hard drive to store information and a 128GB SSD with M.2 connectivity. Depending on the model, it can include an operating system or it is FreeDOS (without any operating system).

This model incorporates the GTX950M 2GB GDRR3 that will go just to use the latest generation games. We see it more appropriate for users who do not give so much importance to the game, but do want to have a graphic more oriented to graphic design.

Regarding its storage, it has a 1TB 5400 RPM hard disk with SATA 3 interface, a 128 GB M.2 module signed by Micron M600 with read rates of 560 MB / s and write of 400 MB / s that will take care of the main disk.

The keyboard has a complete distribution in Spanish (Incorporates the Ñ). It is divided into two zones: alpha-numeric keyboard and independent numbers. As a curiosity, we find a red LED lighting system adjustable in various intensity modes. Ergonomics is absolute and the sensations are great. A lot of attention, look for us on the sides of the pc… we have the power button in the upper right part of the keyboard?

About connectivity, it has an RJ45 10/100/1000 Intel, Bluetooth 4.0 connection, Wifi 802.11 AC connection, SD Card Reader (SDHC / SDXC) / MMC / MS / MS PRO / MS PRO DUO and an optical storage unit DVD 8X Supermulti double layer. The battery has a power of 48WH and is made up of 4 cells.

When we turn the laptop over, we see some grids that improve the cooling of the equipment without using an auxiliary base. Once we open it, we remove the cover and we see a division made up of three zones: SATA disk storage area (1TB disk), RAM memory modules and finally the area for the unit with M.2 connection.

Test of performance

Final words and conclusion

The Asus GL552J is a laptop that has left a great taste in our mouth after trying it after a week of intensive testing. We can find it in different models: with an i5 processor (about 600 euros) or already close to 830 with the i7 processor. In both cases, it incorporates the 2 GB GTX 950 GDDR3 graphics card.

In relation to its use for gamers, it is true that it falls quite short for games in Full HD quality. If Asus had opted for the GDDR5 version it would have improved the experience a great percentage.

One of its strong points is the possibilities it offers us for expansion. We have a SATA 3 connection (where the 1TB disk goes), and a second M.2 for an SSD disk. That is, if we opt for the model without SSD, we can buy an M.2 tablet for less than 100 euros of 240GB and have a powerful and fast equipment. The battery has a durability of 3 hours at a moderate performance, with a little intensive use we can stretch up to 6 to 7 hours.

In short, the Asus GL552J is a notebook designed for high performance and for users who play sporadically and don't care about filters. It's beautifully designed and its backlit keyboard lives up to the Republic of Gamers.
