When you think you have tried and shared with you the best GTX 1080 Ti on the market, Asus sends us its new Asus GTX 1080 Ti Poseidon with a brutal dissipation design, great overclocking potential and scandalous temperatures.

Get comfortable, heat up some popcorn and open a drink (energy voucher too, but only today) that we started with the review.

We appreciate the trust and the transfer of the product to Asus:

Asus GTX 1080 Ti Poseidon technical characteristics

Design and unboxing

As usual at Asus, they present us with a red background and a large image of the graphics card.

While in the rear area we have all the specifications and technical characteristics of the product.

We also have a cover where it shows us the benefits of the card. We continue!

Once we open the box we find a CD with the drivers / software, a quick guide and some stickers to give a different touch to our computer.

The Asus GTX 1080 Ti Poseidon graphics card uses the new graphics architecture Nvidia Pascal, specifically it is the GP102 that It is manufactured on a 16 nm FinFET lithograph and its die is 314 mm2 in size. While a total of 224 texturizing units (TMUs) and 88 crawling units (ROPs) complement it.

Specifically, the Asus GTX 1080 Ti Poseidon works in two possible profiles. Both equipped with Turbo Boost 3.0. The clocks really are really good :

  • Overclock mode: 1620 MHz / 17339 MHz Gaming mode: 1594 MHz / 1708 MHz

It is also important to know that they incorporate the GDDR5X enhanced memories. These run at a frequency of 11010 MHz and a 352 bit bus. Obviously we can tighten them a little more and get a slight% performance.

Rear backplate view. The logo is lightable!

The graphics card has dimensions of 29.8 x 15.8 x 5 cm and a weight of over 1 kg. Its weight is higher due to the hybrid cooling system it incorporates. Specifically, it comes equipped with Auto-Extreme Tecnhology cooling that incorporates a casing with two fans, an aluminum radiator and a liquid cooling block.

As it could not be missing, it has 0dB technology. What does it mean? It allows the chipset, the supply phases and memories to be kept at the lowest possible temperature (less than 55ºC) without having to activate the fans.

The heatsink is accompanied by several aluminum sheets that cool all the components, and of course with IP5X technology that resists dust and offers a longer life to the fans. Another of its most interesting options is that it offers a static pressure greater than 105% and is three times quieter than hybrid heatsinks from previous generations.

The graphics card does not occupy the traditional 2 slots in its installation. But it almost occupies 2.5d, so in SLI configurations we must pass both graphics through water to have the best possible performance.

It also includes the AURA RGB lighting system, allowing us to choose from 16.8 million colors and to customize our ROG components with various effects. For example, among them we will find: blinking, static, with the rhythm of the music and many more.

It incorporates two 8-pin power connections. We always recommend at least mounting a QUALITY 600W power supply, we do not know what model? Then check out our guide to the best PSUs on the market.

Finally we show you the rear connections made up of:

  • 1 DVI connection. 2 Displayport connections. 2 HDMI connections.

PCB and internal components

Removing the heatsink is a very simple task. It is as simple as removing the 4 main screws (the one with the warranty seal) and the rest of the screws that take the rest of the liquid cooling block and the supply phases.

We find a heatsink with 5 8mm heatpipes and several thermalpads in charge of correctly cooling the entire system. The outer shell is plastic and you have already seen it in previous images.

The Asus GTX 1080 Ti Poseidon It has a top-notch PCB and 10 + 2 power phases. To keep as many memories as the main components, it has thermalpads that make contact between the water block and the main components, which improves all the cooling of the system.

All components are signed by Super Alloy Power II technology. It offers improved components that allow greater durability and, above all, a great potential for overclocking. One of the best PCBs we've ever tried? Surely yes!

For benchmarks we will use the following titles:

  • 3DMark Fire Strike normal.3DMark Fire Strike 4K version.Heaven Superposition.

All tests have been passed with the filters to the maximum unless we indicate otherwise. In order to have adequate performance, we have carried out three types of tests: the first is the most common at Full HD 1920 x 1080, the second resolution is making the leap to 2K or 1440P (2560 x 1440P) gamers and the most enthusiastic with 4K (3840 x 2160). The operating system we have used has been Windows 10 Pro 64 bit and the latest drivers available from the Nvidia website.

What are we looking for in the tests?

First, the best possible image quality. The most important value for us is the average FPS (Frames per second), the higher the number of FPS the more fluid the game will go. To differentiate the quality a bit, we leave you a table to assess the quality in FPS, but we will also have the minimum Fps in the tests that were thus possible:

FRAMES BY SECONDS

Frames for Seconds. (FPS)

Gameplay

Less than 30 FPS Limited
30 - 40 FPS Playable
40 - 60 FPS Good
Greater than 60 FPS Fairly Good or Excellent

Synthetic benchmarks

This time, we've narrowed it down to three tests as we consider them to be more than enough as synthetic performance tests.

Game Testing

We have decided to make the leap to checking various games manually. The reason? Very simple, we want to give a much more realistic vision and cover tests with current games. Since we make an effort, it is consistent with the level of the website and that of our readers.

Asus GPUTweak II + Overclock Software

Note: Remember that overclocking or manipulation carries a risk, we and any manufacturer are not responsible for improper use, use the head and always do so at your own risk.

We have increased the overclocking capacity to 1626 MHz in the core, leaving a maximum of 2.05 GHz and the memories in 1437 MHz. The rise is not that it is scandalous, since it comes quite a rise + 2GHz and the improvement we found it's just a few FPS.

Temperature and consumption

The temperatures of the Asus GTX 1080 Ti Poseidon have been quite remarkable. At rest we have obtained 48ºC since the fans are in passive mode until some game is activated and the temperature rises. While playing we do not exceed 73 ºC in any case. While with liquid cooling it does not exceed 40ºC (double radiator only for it).

Another of the great advantages of this range is the reduced consumption that we have in the equipment. Until very recently it was unthinkable to have a high-end graphics and get 55 W at rest and 365 W playing with an Intel i7-7700K processor.

Final words and conclusion about Asus GTX 1080 Ti Poseidon

The Asus GTX 1080 Ti Poseidon is one of the best creations released by Asus. Its hybrid system is nothing. Since we saw it in previous generations, but the good thing about this new design is that

We recommend reading the best graphics cards on the market.

In our tests we have been able to verify its performance both by water and by air. In Air it is heated practically the same as the Strix version, while in water we have great temperatures. For the most curious we have used a DK pump and dual radiator EK KIT.

In short, we are facing the most enthusiastic graphics card of the players. We have an RGB lighting system, a very nice design, premium construction materials and a good overclocking ability. Its availability is unknown, but if it arrived a few days ago, it means that it will soon be in stores. While its price is estimated to be higher than 999 euros (we are waiting for confirmation from Asus).
