Design and unboxing

Asus makes a gala presentation in a standard size box format that combines the colors black and green on its cover. On the black background, we see an image of the new Strix heatsink and its compatibility with virtual reality, Ansel and DirectX 12.

In the rear area we find all the most important detailed technical specifications. Heatsink, fans and some adjustments to the PCB are highlighted in this new version of the Asus Gaming series.

Once we open the box we find the following bundle:

The Asus GTX 1080 Ti Strix graphics card uses the most powerful chip of the moment: Pascal GP102 that It is manufactured in 16 nm FinFET and with a reduced size of 314 mm2. It is a chip that incorporates a total of 3, 584 CUDA cores in the top-of-the-range version.

It is complemented by a total of 224 texturing units (TMUs) and 88 crawling units (ROPs). The Asus Strix GTX 1080 Ti works at frequencies on its 1, 569 MHz GPU in base mode that goes up to 1, 800 MHz under Turbo Boost 3.0 for spectacular performance.

Like its younger sister, it incorporates the new GDDR5X memory, which although it does not measure up to the powerful HBM… But the problem is the same as with the GTX 1080, manufacturing costs and few chips will make it reach the next generation. The memories run at a frequency of 1376 MHz (5555 effective MHZ) and we can go up to 1500 MHz without too much difficulty. In total, it has 11 GB GDDR5X with a 352 bit bus interface, which combining it are more than enough to play in fully stable 4K UHD resolutions.

As expected the Asus GTX 1080 Ti Strix features the new DirectCu III heatsink. It is a huge heatsink made up of a dense monolithic aluminum radiator that improves 30% more dissipation than the previous model. This is thanks to a 40% improvement in the heatsink surface and its 2.5 slot size.

Its dimensions are 29.8 x 13.4 x 5.25 mm and it has an important weight. It also has several nickel-plated copper heatpipes and three Cooltech fans with PWM control. What does PWM stand for? That the same graphics card can automatically control the rotation of each fan, and as we saw in other models, it has the functionality of leaving them stopped (0dB) at rest. With all this it promises to keep the Pascal GP102 core at a much lower operating temperature compared to the reference model with very low noise.

If not enough, they have Asus Wing-Blade technology to generate up to 105% more air pressure. This heatsink has the peculiarity that it keeps the fans off until the GPU reaches a certain temperature, with all this, it promises a great cooling capacity.

It also includes the AURA RGB lighting system, allowing us to choose from 16.8 million colors and to customize our ROG components with various effects. For example, among them we will find: blinking, static, with the rhythm of the music and many more.

As we can see, it incorporates two 8 + 8-pin PCI Express connections to give a good power supply to the graphics card. This will come in handy when NVIDIA decides to unlock the serial voltage (if it ever does) of the graphics card.

It is an interesting view in front of us. We see that we have a black and a white cable connected. These serve both to control the three fans and the RGB Aura lighting.

But we found 4 red pins which is also compatible for one Aura LED extension and two 4-pin FanConnect heads. What is it for? It allows us to connect fans of our tower and control it from the motherboard itself via software.

Finally, we show you the rear connections made up of:

Asus GTX 1080 Ti Strix engineers have assembled all components on a fully customizable PCB with a robust VRM consisting of 10 + 2 Phase Super Alloy Power II. They have also integrated premium alloy components into their graphics card designs to enhance overall reliability, thus generating boards that are approximately 50% cooler than their previous designs.

It uses a metallic internal backplate that improves the dissipation in the memories and power phases. The memory chips are manufactured by Micron MT58K256M321JA-110 at 11, 000 MHz effective. Really the quality of refrigeration and construction is impeccable… we can hardly fault it.

For benchmarks we will use the following titles:

All tests have been passed with the filters to the maximum unless we indicate otherwise. In order to have adequate performance, we have carried out three types of tests: the first is the most common at Full HD 1920 x 1080, the second resolution is making the leap to 2K or 1440P (2560 x 1440P) gamers and the most enthusiastic with 4K (3840 x 2160). The operating system we have used has been Windows 10 Pro 64 bit and the latest drivers available from the Nvidia website.

What are we looking for in the tests?

First, the best possible image quality. The most important value for us is the average FPS (Frames per second), the higher the number of FPS the more fluid the game will go. To differentiate the quality a bit, we leave you a table to assess the quality in FPS, but we will also have the minimum Fps in the tests that were thus possible:

All tests are with the overclock profile activated. ? We did tests with Gaming and we did not find large performance differences .

Overclock and first impressions with Asus GPUTweak II

Serial comes quite up, exactly up to 1974 MHz. We have decided to do the maximum overclock that allows us to serial in +50 MHz in the core to the Asus GTX 1080 Ti Strix, leaving a maximum of 2064 MHz and the memories at 1509 MHz.

Does it go up a little? Yes, but it is that we are reaching the limit of 2.1 GHz, which is where they are all arriving. What is the improvement? After our tests just 1-2 FPS so it is not a brutal improvement either. As it comes standard it is more than enough to work with any game to the fullest.

Temperature and consumption

The temperatures of the Asus GTX 10 80 Ti Strix could not have been better. At rest we have obtained 26ºC since the fans are in passive mode until some game is activated and the temperature rises. While playing we do not exceed 64º C in any case. With overclock we stay at 26º at rest and 67º at maximum performance.

Another of the great advantages of this range is the reduced consumption that we have in the equipment. Until very recently it was unthinkable to have high-end graphics and get 66 W at rest and 321 W playing with an Intel i7-7700K processor. While overclocked it goes up to 73 W at rest and 372 W at maximum performance.

Final words and conclusion about Asus GTX 1080 Ti Strix

Asus has shown once again why it is one of the best graphics card assemblers on the market. The new Asus GTX 10 80 Ti Strix was born to lead the GTX 1080 Ti Custom (custom) on the market.

It has a DirectCU III cooling system consisting of three 92mm fans supported by Asus Wing-Blade technology and a 2.5-bay design. If that has a PCB with 10 + 2 power phases, long-lasting components and an RGB Aura lighting system, it embodies excellence.

In our performance tests we have verified that its temperatures are down to -20ºC at maximum power compared to the reference Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti that we tested exclusively in Spain. Its performance is somewhat higher, exceeding in games between 2 to 4 FPS… if we overclock the card we can drag some more. That in configurations with 4K monitors, these little extras are always appreciated.

Our tests with the HTC Vive have been excellent and there is no title that will catch your eye. We believe that it is one of the best options that we are going to find in the market. Its recommended price is 829.90 euros and an imminent arrival in the main Spanish stores is estimated.
