Ready to see our analysis? Do not miss it!

We thank Asus for trusting the product for its analysis:

Asus Maximus X Apex technical features

Unboxing and design

Asus Maximus X Apex comes in a cardboard box that follows the typical design of the brand's ROG series. The box is quite bulky and the design could not be better.

While in the back all the most important features and specifications are detailed in perfect English so that no one misses a single detail.

Inside we find a complete bundle:

  • Asus Maximus X Apex motherboard

It is a new motherboard with an ATX format that reaches dimensions of 30.5 cm x 27.2 cm, so it is a fairly common design in this regard. As we can see it is built with a combination of colors black, gray and red that looks great and fits a lot with the aesthetics of the ROG series.

We leave you a view of the back.

Asus always takes great care of the cooling and this Asus Maximus X Apex was not going to be an exception so two large heatsinks have been placed on the VRM system and a third on the Z370 chipset. The two VRM heatsinks are joined by a top-quality copper heatpipe to maximize heat transfer.

Speaking of VRM, it is a Digi + system with the best quality components, this is what is known as Asus Super Alloy Power 2 technology, among which are 10K metallic capacitors, MicroFine Alloy Chokes, NexFET PW MOSFET and Japanese capacitors.. This achieves greater stability and better electrical efficiency, all in order to achieve higher levels of overclock and therefore better system performance.

This power system takes power through a 24-pin ATX connector and an 8-pin EPS connector, the usual configuration within the Z370 platform and which is more than enough to ensure the best possible power for Coffee Lake processors. This architecture is very efficient with the use of energy even in high overclock conditions.

We continue with a total of two DIMM slots compatible with up to 32 GB of DDR4 RAM, at frequencies above +4500 MHz Non-ECC. It is a dual channel system so we must always install an even number of modules to get the most out of it. Of course it includes compatibility with XMP 2.0 profiles to be able to overclock in a very simple way.

We now turn to see the possibilities of this Asus Maximus X Apex within gaming, the board has three PCIe 3.0 x16 slots and a fourth slot that operates electrically at 4x, this means that we can mount a system with excellent performance in video games. It is compatible with AMD 4-Way CrossFireX and NVIDIA 2-Way SLI to fit the needs of all enthusiastic users. It also has two PCIe 3.0 / 2.0 x1 slots for expansion cards.

We now turn to see the storage possibilities of this excellent motherboard and we find two ROG DIMM.2 Module slots compatible with 2242/2260/2280/22110 storage devices, one in PCIE 3.0 x 4 mode and the other in PCIE 3.0 x 4 and SATA modes for added versatility.

It also has 4 SATA III 6 Gb / s ports, making it a motherboard that offers us very wide options in terms of storage and that will not fall short with any user, no matter how demanding it is. It supports Raid 0, 1, 5, 10, Intel Smart Response Technology, and Optane.

Now we come to the sound card and we find an 8-channel ROG SupremeFX system that will delight the most demanding users with audio quality, of course, for this you will have to have speakers or helmets to match this system.. Among the most important improvements that this sound system includes we come across a DAC for professional helmets, Nichicon capacitors and gold-plated connections. All this without forgetting its excellent Sonic Studio III software that will help us make the most of it in a very simple way.

As it could not be otherwise in a motherboard of this range in 2017, it incorporates Asus Aura RGB lighting technology. It is an advanced RGB LED lighting system that incorporates a total of six profiles to choose from, all of which is managed in a very simple way using software:

  • Static: Always on Breath: Slow cycle on and off Strobe: On and off Color cycle: Goes from one color to another Music effect: Responds to the beat of music CPU temperature: Changes color according to CPU load

Asus Maximus X Apex is one of the few Asus motherboards that incorporates the pre-mounted rear panel so that we will not have to waste time placing the typical badge.

Below we detail the rear connections:

  • 1 x PS / 2 Keyboard (Violet) 1 x PS / 2 Mouse (Green) 1 x HDMI 1 x Network Port 1 x Optical S / PDIF Out 1 x Clear CMOS Button 1 x USB BIOS Flashback Button 5 x Gold Plated Audio Connectors 6 x USB 3.1 Gen 11 x USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-A1 x USB 3.1 Type-C1 x 5G LAN port

The Asus Maximus X Apex does not forget about the players at any time and for this reason it includes the advanced GameFirst IV technology, its function is to prioritize the data packages related to video games to reduce latency and improve the performance of our network. Players will be able to experience the new Multi-Gate Teaming technology and Intelligent mode features.

BIOS

The BIOS of the Asus Maximus X Apex is at a higher level than the rest of the motherboards that we have analyzed. We really liked the wide variety of parameters to modify, its ability to save profiles, the ease of stable overclocking (it has broken many records this year for the APEX series) and the monitoring of temperatures / voltages of the system. An Asus ten!

Final words and conclusion about Asus Maximus X Apex

The Asus Maximus X Apex is a high-end motherboard and ideal for those users who are professionally dedicated to overclocking (Hwbot and private events of the brands) and want to beat any record in the world with LN2. Also for those users who want to get their six-core processor -K up to the last MHz without acquiring a 500-euro motherboard.

We have loved its distinctive aggressive design and the stability it offers by overclocking from its BIOS. In our performance tests we have obtained great results with games like Battlefield, Doom 4, overwatch or the veteran Crysis 3. How the i7-8700K moves games!)

We recommend reading the best motherboards on the market

It incorporates a lot of extras but we lack for the advanced user four memory slots, Wifi 802.11 AC connectivity or M.2 connections with a heatsink as standard to improve cooling. But we know that the Asus Maximus X Hero is already there for that purpose , which we recommend you read because of the great taste it left us on the day of its launch.

Although if you are a super enthusiastic user and you do not want to wait for the Asus Maximus X Extreme and you prefer to have some other limitation: fewer memory slots, SATA connections and not-so-improved sound… the Asus Maximus X Apex will take every last MHz to your processor and RAM for just 322 euros. What do you think of this motherboard? Is it worth it for the normal or enthusiastic user?
