After a few months of the launch of the Z390 chipset, it is time to present you the Asus ROG Maximus XI Apex motherboard in ATX format and designed especially for overclockers. With its great power phases, a more daring design, the ability to take out the last MHz of your processor and with RGB lighting that is very pleasing to the eye are some of its benefits.
Ready to see our analysis? Let's start!
First of all, we thank Asus for the trust placed in us when transferring the product to us for analysis.
Asus ROG Maximus XI Apex technical features
Unboxing and design
The Asus ROG Maximus XI Apex arrives in the classic Asus Republic of Gamer series case . Red and black tones stand out in its design, along with a large letter typeface that quickly identifies the model we have verified.
At the rear we find all the most important technical characteristics detailed.
Once we open the box we find two departments, the first one with the motherboard and the second one with all the accessories. The bundle is summarized in:
- Asus ROG Maximus XI Apex Motherboard Manual and Quick GuideTwo sticker strips and coastersROG LED strip and 80cm extenderSLI Bridge HB BRIDGE 2 WayQConnector assorted: M2 NVMe… Wi-FiSlot DIMM.2 antenna kit
Asus ROG Maximus XI Apex is a motherboard with ATX format and dimensions (somewhat wider than usual). Its design is something special, since it has a more innovative design than the perfect classic rectangle that presents all the motherboards on the market, it is X-shaped (somewhat camouflaged), that helps to have a better immersion in its RGB lights.
At the dissipation level we find two good heatsinks in the power supply phases and another very interesting one with RGB lighting in the Z390 chipset. The good thing about this chipset is that if it is well refrigerated it heats up very little.
Asus has not cut costs and has mounted 8 power phases accompanied by VRM Digi + technology, the benefits of 5-Way Optimization features and SuperAlloy Power 2 components that ensure maximum stability even when performing a very intense overclock.
The integration of two DDR4 slots for RAM will surely shock you. Usually we find a total of 4 slots to install the 128 GB that the platform allows today the LGA 1151 socket and a maximum speed of + 4500 MHz. Both are protected with SAFEDIMM technology that makes them harder than the usual ones.
As we have seen on other Asus ROG Maximus Apex motherboards, Asus chooses not to include M.2 connections. on your board, but uses a DIMM.2 adapter to install up to 2 NVME M.2 and Intel Optane connections, to cool these hot memories it has a thick and important heatsink.
We really liked that Intel incorporates some holes to install a fan and focus a good jet of air towards them. An RGB LED connection is also standard.
At the storage level, we see a total of six SATA connections compatible with RAID technology 0.1, 5 and 10. Let's be honest, this motherboard is focused for overclockers and all these storage connections will not be used in 99% of cases. For a more normal user we see a Hero or a Formula as great options for a similar price (except APEX punctual offer).
APEX's PCI Express layout features a total of three PCIe 3.0 slots at x16 speed and a PCIe x1 connection. The first two x16 connections feature Safeslot technology, which as we have seen in previous generations allows for more robust graphics cards and improves data transfer.
As expected it is compatible with AMD CrossFireX 3 Way technology and with Nvidia SLI 2 Way graphics card .
The sound quality on motherboards has greatly improved in recent years. Asus has chosen a classic sound chip such as the Realtek ALC1220 enhanced with SupremeFX S1220A technology. Along with a shielded audio track to avoid electromagnetic interference emitted by both the motherboard and the other components, this way the sound will not have any type of noise. It also features premium nichicon capacitors made in Japan and an improved 113 dB signal-to-noise ratio. Very good motherboard?
One of the great improvements in these last two generations in the APEX is connectivity. We came across an Intel I219-V gigabit connection and an INtel Wireless AC 9560 2 × 2 module that works very well at short and long distance. This small chip incorporates Bluetooth 5.0 to pair our Xbox controller or any other peripheral or electronic device (Smartphone, Speaker, etc…).
Asus Aura Sync lighting is one of the most complete on the market. The Asus ROG Maximus XI Apex allows us to customize a total of 16.8 million colors and a multitude of light effects. The good thing about this motherboard is that the lighting is less intrusive, so it doesn't bother too much. No to the fairs! Thank you!
I would also like to highlight that all USB connections have truevolt technology. What does this mean? They have a voltage of 5 V, this is great for us to charge our smartphone much faster and greatly reduces power fluctuations. At the back we find the following connections:
- 1 x Clear CMOS Button1 x BIOS Flashback Button1 x PS / 2 keyboard port1 x PS / 2 mouse port1 x Anti-surge LAN (RJ45) port6 x USB 3.1 Gen1 ports 4 x USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports (3 x Type-A and 1 x Type-C) 1 x Optical S / PDIF out5 x audio jacks

Again Asus shows us because they have the best BIOS on the market. Many options to do an advanced overclock, monitoring of all the components of the motherboard and adjustments for the boot.
Overclocking and temperatures
After many hours of testing on our test bench, we have been able to reach 5 GHz stable 24/7 with a voltage of 1.31 v. The performance is spectacular and we achieved excellent results in games and benchmarks.
After 12 hours of testing with Prime95 in its Custom version, we found excellent temperatures. The highest temperature focus reaches only 51.2 ºC! We love the great efficiency of Asus heatsinks and the quality of their power phases, which although they have less than the rest of their rivals always give superior performance.
Final words and conclusion about Asus ROG Maximus XI Apex
Asus has once again demonstrated that it is one of the best motherboard manufacturers in the world. Your Asus Maximus XI Apex is designed to take every last MHz out of our processor, as it is and has been one of the greatest exponents in overclock competitions.
It has 8 power phases, an X-shaped design, capacity to hold up to 32 GB of RAM, an improved sound card and a very useful Wifi connection. As you have seen in our tests, the temperatures of the VRM are very good, since the heatsink is super efficient and allows us to leave our i9-9900k at 5 GHz easily.
We recommend reading our guide to the best motherboards on the market
We really liked adding a DIMM.2 connection to connect a pair of passive-cooled NVMe SSDs and a fan.
Currently we can find it in online stores in Europe for about 399 euros, but availability is low. In the coming weeks we will have it available in Spain. We believe that it is a perfect motherboard for overclockers, since for this price there are very interesting options such as the Hero that is more focused on the gaming world. But if there is an offer from APEX, do not hesitate.
