Unboxing and design

Asus presents its Asus Maximus X Hero motherboard in its classic red "Republic of Gamer" design. On its cover we find the model printed in large letters, while the main certifications are in the lower right corner.

On the back, it details the main technical characteristics and all the news in this new generation of Z370 motherboards. Additionally, we find two QR codes that send us to the Asus website to complete with more detailed information.

The Asus Maximus X Hero is an ATX format motherboard with dimensions of 30.4 cm x 24.4 cm for the LGA 1151 socket. As Asus is accustomed to us, it includes two zones with passive cooling: the first for the digital power phases and a second for the new Z370 chipset. Being quite thick, its heatsinks and thermal pads offer maximum efficiency at the best temperatures.

With a total of 10 power supply phases supported by Digi + technology, what does this mean? Mostly including the highest quality components: such as 10K metallic capacitors, MicroFine Alloy Chokes, NexFET PW MOSFET and Japanese capacitors. What does this whole set mean? Mainly that the system is much more stable, durable and much more reliable if we need to overclock.

Over power includes a 24-pin ATX connection and an auxiliary 8-pin EPS connection. As we expected we will not need 850 or 1000W power supplies to have a stable system. Intel Coffe Lake offers us the best power / consumption experience on the market.

It has a total of 4 DDR4 RAM slots, Compatible with up to 64 GB and frequencies above + 4133 MHz Non-ECC. In the event that you do not know how to activate or configure your memories, you can stimulate them from the BIOS with the classic XMP 2.0 profile.

As a high-end motherboard we find two M.2 connections type 2242/2260/2280 and support with SATA & PCI Express 3.0 in x4 mode. Although we have a rather interesting novelty in this model:

The first slot is located above the first PCI Express x16 connector with a robust heatsink and a thick white thermal pad. This passive cooling system (Note: it does not have a fan) dramatically improves the temperatures of the NVMe SSD pads. Remember that these SSDs are very hot, and in this way we will avoid performance drops due to the heat generated. Very good work Asus!

The Asus Maximus X Hero presents a very interesting layout of PCI Express connections (layout). This organization allows us to install up to three PCI Express 3.0 cards and additionally three other PCI Express x1 cards.

In our tests we have used our best components: i7-8700K at 4800 MHz in all its cores, 32 GB DDR4 Trident Z RGB with AURA RGB technology and the best graphics card on the market Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti. All games in 4K resolution have run at more than 60 FPS, while in Full HD resolution it has been left over. Currently the best combination on the market!
