Finding the perfect monitor is sometimes a difficult task, especially if you want to compete at a high level. On this occasion, we have brought you the review of the new 24.5-inch Asus PG258Q Gaming monitor, 1920 x 1080 resolution, a chilling refresh rate of 240 Hz and compatibility with G-Sync technology for Nvidia's GTX cards.

Make a bowl of popcorn! The review begins in 3… 2… 1… NOW!

We appreciate the trust and the transfer of the product to Asus:

Asus PG258Q technical specifications

Many of you will wonder what resolution you have or what is the best. The standard is the 1920 x 1080 also known as FULL HD, then we move on to the 2K screens: 2560 x 1440 and the last ones as the 4K 3840 x 2160.

This time we stayed in the most purchased resolution to date: Full HD. Where any user can enjoy high definition and in this case take advantage of all the gamer features of this monitor.

Unboxing and design

We receive the new Asus PG258Q monitor in a large box and with a considerable weight. On the cover is an image of the monitor in letters with a tall font, the model itself.

While in the back we have more information about the technical specifications of this new monitor.

Once we open the box we find the following inside:

  • Asus PG258Q monitor. Power cord. Power supply. DisplayPort cable. Quick start guide. USB 3.0 cable. Support CD. Warranty card. HDMI cable. LED stand.

The Asus PG258Q is the maximum exponent that a monitor in 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution can achieve. With a size of 24.5 inches of screen, which we consider the most interesting for a Full HD monitor, complement it with a native refresh rate of 240 Hz and a response of 1ms gray to gray ( GTG ). Without a doubt, it is one of its strongest points.

We come across physical dimensions with a 564.1x (383.7 ~ 503.7) x 253.7 mm base and a weight of 5.6 KG. While if you want to hang it on an articulating arm we will have 564.1 x 330.6 x 72.5 mm and its weight would drop to 3.14 kg.

Speaking of more technical characteristics, it is time to comment that it incorporates a TN panel with a maximum brightness of 400 cd / ㎡ and a contrast ratio of 1000: 1. The first impressions in its launch were quite good, even used to an IPS panel it left us a very good taste.

Although the viewing angles are not its strongest points due to its TN Panel. We can assure you that it defends itself very well. Although we do not recommend it for graphic design use, but exclusively for gaming.

As we have seen in other Republic Of Gamer (ROG) models, its aesthetics are almost perfect and its edges are very thin. Its design is fantastic, far superior to the rest, and the combination of colors Armor Titanium and Plasma Copper color scheme make it a unique monitor. While in the right area we find the OSD management panel and in the lower area centered in relief the Asus logo.

Already in the rear area of the monitor we find the screws for the VESA 100 x 100 mm connection, in case we want to place it on an articulated arm or on a wall adapter.

Among its rear connections we have an HDMI connection, another DisplayPort 1.2, and two USB 3.0 connections. In addition to a 3.5mm Mini-Jack audio output, a power outlet and a Kensington lock.

As we have seen in other models of the 2016 generation, Asaus opts for an external power supply. We like the idea because we save heat on both the monitor panel and all electronics.

We will briefly explain what NVIDIA G-SYNC technology consists of: Basically it allows the action during the game to be much faster, smoother and more pleasant when you are in your game. What G-SYNC does is synchronize the refresh rate of the screen with your computer's NVIDIA graphics card, eliminating the effect of "tearing", thus minimizing jerks and delay in entry. It is possibly one of the technologies that I like the most, because in this way FPS drops in games are minimized.

In addition to Nvidia G-Sync there is AMD Freesync that does the same job but only for graphics cards signed by AMD. Do not be surprised that Asus removes a variant of this monitor with FreeSync support, in this model it does not support it. If you have an AMD graphics card take this detail into account.

We would also like to highlight three quite interesting features to consider:

  • It protects us against ultra-low blue light that has been shown to be harmful to the eyes and allows the sensor to be adjusted up to four levels. It also incorporates an anti-flicker technology that improves the gaming experience and avoids eyestrain, which is highly recommended during long gaming sessions. Exclusive GamePlus technology that offers an improvement in the vision of games with its four profiles: peephole, timer, FPS counter and the possibility of screen alignment). Additionally, it integrates Nvidia 3D Vision support for users looking to use virtual reality alongside their monitor. GameVisual allows the user to choose between six default settings, which optimize and improve the image in different situations in use. Among them we find: landscapes, races, cinema, RTS / RPG, sRGB and FPS.

Finally, we want to tell you about its highly adjustable base that we already saw in the Asus PG348Q, it has a three-legged design and an RGB lighting system that reflects the ROG logo on the base of our table. Cool right? ? We also have a small hole (which usually brings all the monitors) to easily organize the power cable and video signal.

OSD menu

Its OSD menu is quite comfortable and we get used to it pretty quickly. It allows us to configure any value easily and intuitively: color tones, contrast, brightness, sRGB colors, profiles and other adjustments thanks to its fantastic 5-way navigation joystick.

It also has the Turbo button that allows us to change the hertz from 100 to 240 Hz. What game are we interested in playing with 60 and which with 240 hertz? It is recommended to play at 100 Hz with slow games (MOBA style) while the recommended ones are the frantic Counter Strike CS GO, Overwatch or Doom 4. Being the maximum exponent the classic CS: GO?

Experience and conclusion about the Asus PG258Q

The Asus PG258Q is one of the best best monitors on the market. Its characteristics guarantee it: 24.5 inches, TN panel, 1ms response, 240 Hz refresh rate, premium OSD controls, base that offers very good adjustments and an elegant design with the new Armor Titanium and Plasma Copper colors from the Republic of Gamer family.

Another of the most interesting points is its new design of ventilation much more efficient and long-lived for the Asus PG258Q. How many of you have verified during several hours of games that the screen is "burning"? Asus minimizes this situation with a heatsink twice as large and always keeping temperatures at bay. The exclusion of the power supply inside it also helps.

To check the performance of the monitor we have used the following scenarios:

  • Office and design: It is not the best monitor for this purpose, because theirs is to use an IPS monitor since the fidelity of the colors is ideal. Unlike other models, the panel is very successful. With a good calibration or using the sRGB profile it could save us for some sporadic occasion (Especially in graphic design). Games: The sensations offered by the monitor can be classified as impressive. But you must bear in mind that to use this monitor to the maximum you need a high-performance equipment. Games like CS: GO or Overwatch do not request a very demanding graphic demand and you can get those 240 Hz without much difficulty. But for other types of games we would need one or two high-end graphics cards. Multimedia: The resolution and the TN panel helps a lot in the quality of the blacks. The only thing we have had to do is deactivate the LED on the base as it distracted us with the ROG logo. 100% recommendable.

Its availability will arrive in the coming weeks and it is estimated that its price will be around 695 euros. It is undoubtedly a great monitor, but it is focused on a very specific audience: competitive games and users who want the latest or the latest. For us it is a highly recommended purchase, but for those prices the same thing we would be interested in making the jump to a 2560 x 1440 pixel monitor or even a 4K from the same company, since in 2016 they added enough top-of-the-range catalog.
