It has taken three generations of Intel processors to see a micro ATX motherboard signed by the ASUS Republic Of Gamers series again. Specifically, the Asus ROG Maximus XI Gene has returned with its 10 + 2 power phases, a large overclocking capacity, a brutal aesthetic and a cooling that is beyond doubt.

Do not miss our in-depth analysis that we offer you today. Is it the best micro ATX motherboard? Does it measure up to an ATX motherboard? All this and much more in our analysis.

First of all, we thank Asus for the trust placed in us when transferring the product to us for analysis.

Asus ROG Maximus XI Gene technical characteristics

Unboxing and design

Asus ROG Maximus XI Gene comes with the typical gala presentation of the Maximus series. The motherboard is offered with a very colorful and premium looking cardboard box. The manufacturer has used the entire surface of the box to put several high quality photos, as well as all the most outstanding features.

Inside the box the base plate and all its accessories are organized in two departments. The bundle is made up of:

  • Asus Maximus XI Gene CD motherboard with installation drivers and instruction manual SATA cable set ROG DIMM.2 PCIe 3.0 × 4 RGB lighting cable ROG coaster ROG stickers Wifi antenna cable set

Before going into more detail we leave you a screenshot of the back of the motherboard. We miss an M.2 slot in this location, since on motherboards with reduced format it is quite common. We make you a small spoiler, it compensates it with other characteristics.

The Gene series is back and back in style with the new Asus ROG Maximus XI Gene model. This is a very high-end Micro ATX motherboard, which includes two memory slots that support speeds of up to DDR4-4600, which is the fastest of all Z390 models at launch. This is news that will please enthusiasts and extreme overclockers, who prefer dual-slot memory configurations for better latency thanks to shorter memory tracks.

Asus doesn't want us to miss out on anything, which is why the Asus ROG Maximus XI Gene includes official support for the new 32GB double-height, double-capacity DIMMs, which are expected to hit the market very soon. This means that the board will support up to 64GB of system memory in the two available RAM slots.

Asus has also included the ROG DIMM.2 M.2 slot, which supports PCIe 3.0 x4 interface-based NVMe storage drives directly from the CPU to improve performance. This is something that has been made possible by saving space with the inclusion of only two slots for RAM.

Its LGA 1151 socket is powered by a 10 + 2-phase VRM configuration, which is backed by two 12V 8-pin EPS power inputs, making it one of the most powerful non-ATX motherboards of all the platform, this will be especially attractive for extreme overclockers to sink their teeth. Of course the 24-pin ATX connector is not missing.

This VRM is made up of Super Alloy Power 2 components to maximize durability and stability. Thanks to this we can reach very high levels of overclocking and very stable. Large aluminum heatsinks are placed above the VRM, which will keep all of its elements cool even under full processor load.

Another differentiating feature is the inclusion of a LED debug, a set of DIP switches that are sure to be related to LN2 and sub- zero cooling, along with a CMOS reset button, a system reset switch, and a start button.

As for storage, there are two internal M.2 slots on the board with support for PCIe 3.0 x4 drives, with bandwidth coming from the PCH. The official specification does not mention SATA M.2 SSD support, therefore we will not be able to use SATA III based M.2 SSDs.

Asus ROG Maximus XI Gene also offers us four SATA III ports for hard drives, optical media and 2.5-inch SSDs. It also has support for RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 as it could not be otherwise on a Z390 motherboard.

As a MATX board would, the Asus ROG Maximus XI Gene has only one full-length PCI Express 3.0 x16 slot, along with a smaller PCIe 3.0 x4 slot located just above it. The PCI Express 3.0 x16 slot is reinforced in SafeSlot steel so there are no problems with the largest and heaviest graphics cards on the market.

We also see an integrated audio solution consisting of five 3.5mm audio jacks, and an S / DPIF optical output. All this controlled by a gaming-focused Supreme FX S1220 audio codec. This sound system is based on a separate SupremeFX Shielding PCB section for the two channels, and is made with premium components like Nichicon 12K capacitors, reducing interference as little as possible, and you won't have any trouble communicating on your games. An advanced amplifier is also included, so you can easily use your impedance tin headphones.

On the back panel of the motherboard we find a large amount of USB connectivity that includes three USB 3.1 Gen2 Type A ports, one USB 3.1 Gen2 Type C and two USB 3.0 Type A ports. We also appreciate a single HDMI video output is present along with a single Gigabit Ethernet network port under the Intel I219V Gigabit controller.

It also includes an Intel 9560 Wi-Fi adapter that supports Wave 2 1.73 Gbps wireless connectivity, as well as Bluetooth 5 compatibility . Asus GameFirst technology will improve network performance in games by prioritizing game-related packages, and by reduce the latency of the connection. In total the rear panel includes:

  • 1 x Keyboard / Mouse combo port 1 x HDMI 1 x LAN port (s) (RJ45) 3 x USB 3.1 Gen 2 (red) Type A, 1 x USB 3.1 Gen 2 (red) Type-C6 x USB 3.1 Gen 1 (blue) 2 x USB 2.0, 1 x Clear CMOS, 1 x Wifi Antenna Port

BIOS

If we put the BIOS of a ROG ATX motherboard face to face with that of the Asus ROG Maximus XI Gene we do not see any difference. Like all Asus BIOS, it is rock solid and offers us the most advanced options for overclocking.

To take into account its corporate design: red and black and that we have to confess that it is the BIOS that we feel most comfortable. Excellent work!

Overclocking and temperatures

The processor in frequency of stock marks 1.28 v instead of the 1.32 v that we saw in other motherboards. Regarding overclocking, we have reached 5 GHz with a voltage of 1, 325v. Maybe a little high, but we believe that we do not have a black leg processor and that with a little time we can reach a very good voltage / temperature ratio.

We continue with our new temperature test. After 12 hours of prime95 in long duration, we achieved a temperature in the VRM of 61 ºC with some peaks at 64 ºC. Asus is on the crest of the wave in components and cooling. It has to demonstrate with our i9-9900k processor in stock speed and with overclock it does not rise much more temperatures. He got it from Asus!

Final words and conclusion about Asus ROG Maximus XI Gene

The Asus Z170 Maximus VIII Gene motherboard arrived in 2015 as the latest high-performance MATX model from Asus that is based on this format. Since then, loyal Asus users looking for a replacement for the aforementioned model have had to opt for a Micro ATX model from the Strix series focused on gaming.

The Asus ROG Maximus XI Gene comes with 10 + 2 power phases, a great cooling system, brutal overclocking performance, and great storage possibilities.

Going into more details regarding storage. We have 4 SATA III connections, 2 M.2 NVMe connections cooled by an elongated heatsink and a DIMM.2 module that allows us to install two other M.2 NVME PCI Express 3.0 connections together with two quite robust heatsinks. Wow with this little motherboard!

We recommend reading the best motherboards on the market

Regarding performance, we have obtained very good numbers with the Asus Maximus XI Gene. We have been able to reach 5 GHz without disheveled and with a very measured voltage, taking into account that our processor is not a black leg.

To highlight the great possibilities offered by the BIOS and the best in connectivity (LAN & Wifi) and sound card. Excellent work from Asus! Currently we can find it for a price of 375 euros in the main online stores. What do you think of this little gem? Is that enough for an i9 processor?
