You already know that the world of gaming on mobile phones is a diamond in the rough. Those of Asus know it and that is why they present a smartphone for the most demanding players. The Asus Rog Phone II has a spectacular aesthetic and comes equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 plus processor, 6000 mAh battery and ultra-fast 120Hz AMOLED HDR display with a response time of 1 ms.

Unboxing of Asus Rog Phone II

The presentation of the Asus Rog Phone II has spectacular packaging. It is a box with a polygonal format made of highly rigid matte black cardboard. Along its entire surface are appreciable geometric cut patterns highlighted with shiny resin, being accompanied by the Asus imager with a metallic film.

At the base of the box is where we access its opening since it is a capsule format. Here the company logo is repeated again accompanied by the slogan Republic of Gamers.

On the other hand, we observe the continuation of the polygonal pattern as well as printing on data of the present model, the Asus Rog Phone II along with various seals and quality certificates as well as serial number.

Once we remove the cover, three sections in which the accessories are integrated are visible in the internal structure. First of all we look at the Asus Rog Phone II, presented with the back facing forward. If we continue looking at the following is the AeroActive Cooler II heat sink. Finally, a tab gives us access to a small cardboard box where we find additional documentation as well as the charging cable and power adapter.

The contents of the box are summarized in:

  • Asus Rog Phone II AeroActive Cooler II Transparent Case Aero Case Type-C to C Cable (120cm) SIM Card Removal Tool USB Power Adapter (18W / 30W) Documentation (User Guide and Warranty Card)

Asus Rog Phone II Design

The Asus smartphone has been launched with two different external finishes for its back cover: matte and glossy. For the present review it is this last model that we have received.

Finishes

The Asus Rog Phone II is a very slim and solid mobile phone. Its AMOLED screen is 6.59 ” and has an aspect ratio of 19.5: 9. The coverage of the same is made with Corning Gorilla 6 glass. The glass describes a slight curve to the sides and covers the entire front surface of the smartphone, although we can see a bright black margin that delimits the active area of the screen.

At the base, a metallic-coated sound slot for the speakers is observable, while in the upper margin we have the integrated front camera to the right of the second speaker.

Moving on to looking at the back of the Asus Rog Phone II here the finish of the coating becomes black plastic with a slightly grainy pearl luster.

  • On the left side we have a connection slot for the additional air sink included in the box for the most demanding gaming experiences. On the right hand side we have the button to adjust the volume and another to turn it off and on. Two Air Triggers II or passive heat dissipation slots are also observable. Finally, at its base we have a USB Type-C connection and a 3.5mm audio jack.

We turn to the reverse, this is the section with the most Asus gaming aesthetics and the one that undoubtedly bears the seal of the house. Here we find a discreet decoration with very fine geometric lines with an iridescent effect on the line. Similarly we can find the Republic of Gamers slogan highlighted with this same material in the lower half.

A little further up and right in the center of the back we are greeted by the Asus logo with a change of material visible under the glass of the cover that reveals the presence of backlighting.

In the upper margin, the main and auxiliary rear cameras are observed, accompanied by an LED flashlight and the flash for photography and video.

It is also worth mentioning the detail of the lateral structure that interrupts the smooth design of the reverse and is part of the Rog aerodynamic system for heat dissipation, this being a part separated from the rest of the case by a matte black plastic band and a part orange metal with perforations.

screen

The Asus Rog Phone's screen has a resolution of 2340 x 1080p. It is a 10-bit AMOLED HDR model and can reach 600 nits of brightness outdoors.

Regarding the technical qualities that it offers, it is mandatory to point out technical specifications such as:

  • Contrast ratio 500, 000: 1. Minimum color distinction less than 1 Delta E (ΔE) imperceptible to the human eye. SRGB color gamut percentage of 151.7% and DCI-P3 of 111.8%. Refresh rate up to 120Hz and 1ms response.

Front and rear camera

Its front camera has a capture resolution of 24MP and F2. ' lens opening. The encompassing field of view is 77.9º.

In the rear section, meanwhile, we have two cameras:

  1. The main one has a 48 MP Sony IMX586 sensor and covers a field of view of 79º. The secondary is a 13 MP ultra-panoramic model prepared to cover 125º.

Cabling

Moving on to comment on accessories, the Asus Rog Phone II charger has a 120mm long fiber braided cable with USB Type-C terminations. Regardless we have the power adapter with a load between 18 and 30 watts.

The USB ports meanwhile have a reinforcement coating with enamel finish and screen printing of the Asus logo.

External heatsink

The AeroActive Cooler II is a small and light (30g) accessory that incorporates an internal fan to enhance the cooling of our Asus Rog Phone II in the most demanding gaming sessions.

It consists of a small piece finished in a matte black finish. Here we can also see the repetition of geometric shapes so typical of the brand as well as the Asus logo.

In its lower edge it has a USB type C port with which we can load or transfer data as well as a 3.5 jack.

On the inside we have various product information screen printed as well as the European Quality Certificate among others. This is where the connector to the Asus Rog Phone II is most visible to activate and configure its speed.

The AeroActive Cooler II expands transversely with an integrated tongue on the frame that unfolds reveals an orange-hued decorative pattern. Beside it is also visible the grid pattern on the ventilation for the expulsion of hot air.

Once we place the Asus Rog Phone II inside the frame with a heatsink clamp, we just have to re-adjust its maximum width to the desired measurement. The device can be incorporated with and without the phone case on. It should also be noted that once the back logo backlight pattern is attached , it will be reproduced on the heatsink since the original is covered.

In the same left side port to which we incorporate the heatsink we can connect other types of brand devices, such as additional controls (not included). When the port is not in use, inside the box we have rubber covers to protect the pins from dust or dirt.

Sheath

Speaking of accessories, if you doubt the most grateful is the inclusion of a case with an extremely light and minimalist design. It is a model made of paste with a rigid format and a large number of dies that avoid heat conservation.

The finish of the cover is matte black, although we can find on its inner face a large number of screen-printed details highlighted in resin covering a large part of its surface.

The brand's logo is especially notable, being surrounded by a pattern made up of the Republic of Gamers motto in different sizes and languages.

The rear aspect once placed reveals the rear imager as well as the cameras and LEDs. One of the design diagonals follows the outline of the rear part of the Rog Aerdynamic System, exposing the dissipation grooves.

On the front side, on the other hand, only the corner covers are visible as well as part of the edge. We must say that the cover itself is not of great resistance, but is more clearly oriented to facilitate the grip of the user without restricting the expulsion of heat.

Asus Rog Phone II internal hardware

It's time to take a closer look at the technical capabilities of the Asus Rog Phone II, that this cutie is not just a pretty face.

We start with the processor, and it is that here we find a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus aa 2.96 GHz with 7nm, 64 bits and eight cores. If you are looking for speed, on mobile this is the crème de la crème . Its GPU is a Qualcomm Adreno 640, another bicharraco where they exist. This combination is as inseparable as ketchup and mustard and they offer a truly spectacular performance as you can see in the test bench section below.

Moving on to storage and RAM, our Asus Rog Phone II defaults to 512GB of memory that is expandable up to 1TB. RAM we have by default 8GB LPDDR4X quad-core at 2133MHz, although it is also expandable up to 12GB.

More interesting issues to mention is the operating system, which is here Android Pie with ROG UI interface based on Android 9. It is characterized by presenting a slightly changed interface compared to the native version.

In connectivity, Bluetooth 5.0 as well as WLAN 802.11ad 60 GHz, NFC and Wi-Fi direct cannot be missing. For the most versatile users, it also has a dual slot to insert two Nano SIM cards of 2, 3 and 4G.

Finally, the Asus Rog Phone II does not fall short in terms of security: it has an on-screen fingerprint sensor and facial recognition. For dessert we have monerías such as the AirTrigger II ultrasonic sensors and two vibration motors.

Putting Asus Rog Phone II into use

Here things are clear: this is a mobile to play, but you will also take some pictures of scandal. With such a screen, processor, and cameras, there's nothing out of the reach of the Asus Rog Phone II.

Screen qualities

The color and contrast as we discussed in the technical section are phenomenal. The maximum saturation and brightness of the Asus Rog Phone II transmit vibrant and nuanced tones that we will especially notice in photographs, series or playing videos. All this with a resolution of 1080 x 2340p and a pixel density of 391 dpi.

The standard driving experience is excellent. The touch screen has a very high precision and the processor makes the response to everything we do is practically instantaneous.

The size and resolution of the screen is undoubtedly one of the strongest points of this smartphone. With this, the percentage of active refresh rate is of great interest, which we can modify between 60, 90 or 120 hertz.

It is convenient to keep in mind that a lower refresh rate is a good alternative when we do not make an especially intense use of the phone, but the 120Hz make gaming an extremely fluid experience when playing, which makes it an absolutely recommended option.

Obviously this issue becomes much more decisive in multiplayer online games, although we must remember that the quality of internet connection that we have will always be the other determining factor.

We have had a frankly spectacular gaming experience with titles like Mario Kart Tour and Fortnite Movile, both played at 120Hz with maximum brightness and sound at full blast.

Temperature and cooling

We can't comment on the games without talking about temperature and cooling issues. Although it may surprise you, the Asus Rog Phone II is a phone that heats up very little even when subjected to demanding use. The temperature (which we have monitored with Antutu Benchmark) of the battery usually stays at about 29-30º stable, while the CPU rises to 35-40º. These percentages may vary according to the time and intensity of the activity that we are carrying out, but from the outset they are very encouraging data.

Another factor promoting these favorable numbers is the activation of the Air Triggers and the incorporation of the AeroActive Cooler II external heatsink. The joint work of these factors is capable of keeping the aforementioned temperatures perfectly stable.

Integrated camera, microphones and speakers

A walk around the city is the perfect occasion to see what the Asus Rog Phone II lenses have to offer. The default software present in the smartphone allows you to choose between 7, 9, 12 and 48 megapixels and aspect ratios that vary between 4: 3, 16: 9, 1: 1 and 19.5: 9.

The panoramas come here with scan and merge software that works extremely precisely, making it really impossible to perceive any mismatches or sudden cuts within our capture.

The detail planes are one more way to observe the level of precision of the lens, although we lose quality if we zoom to the maximum and we can notice a certain grain. We should also mention that the 48MP resolution does not support zoom, so to do so we will have to reduce it to 12MP.

Portrait mode is another aspect that most flirtatious users will attract attention. Within it, and how could it be otherwise, we find a beauty filter that includes a large number of independent options in which we can modify the parameters:

  • Change skin tone Smoothed skin Smooth surface Improved eyes Thin cheeks

The results can advance from something subtle to a very evident filter according to the percentage of 0-10 with which we activate each one of them. In these three samples you have:

  1. Face in portrait mode without beauty filter active Portrait mode with everything raised to 50% (5/10) Portrait mode with all options at 100% (10/10)

Photo taken without active night mode

Night Mode is the last category to deal with, and it is that the ability to control the lighting of spaces when it is active is frankly spectacular.

This filter improves the perception of the camera with respect to the various light sources, reducing the intensity of the contrast in these areas until it is able to reproduce the environment in an extremely faithful way as perceived by our eyes.

Panoramic with night mode

This also applies to the panoramic option, which is also present in this category and whose quality speaks for itself.

Regarding video, we can record in resolutions from 720p to 4K at 60fps, although if we want to do it with the wide angle, the fps are reduced to 30 per second.

For slow motion, the maximum resolution is 1080p at up to 240fps or 720 at 480fps. We can also configure a variable anti - flicker option between 50 and 60Hz.

Test of performance

Given all of the above, it's time to do some testing and compare the CPU and GPU performance of the Asus Rog Phone II with competing models currently on the market. To do this, we have used the following programs:

  1. AnTuTu BenchMark GeekBench 5 (multi core) GeekBench 5 (single core) 3DMark Sling Shot Extreme (Open GL ES)

Through Antutu Benchmark we have carried out a test in which we test the GPU, image generation and rendering, scroll and fast loading of elements, video editing, RAM, etc. As you can see the graphic speaks for itself and we are facing a smartphone capable of the best of the best without encountering any kind of difficulty in the testing process.

With Geekbench 5 we have done two performance tests to compare the CPU capacity as a whole and compare it with the single core results. The results here are also quite consistent, although we can see that in multi-core there are models with more efficient performance.

With 3DMark Sling Shot Extreme is when we can see how the Asus Rog Phone II really shines, returning to the top as a good model of smartphone designed for the gaming it is. Its results in the top 3 are really at odds with the Nubia Red Magic 3S and One Plus 7T.

The results obtained exceed 99% of mobiles that have carried out the same test in the application, so you will get an idea of how low the competition that these models face is.

Battery and autonomy

The autonomy you can expect from the Asus Rog Phone II is frankly colossal. Its battery has a capacity of 6000 mAh and is compatible with Quick Charge 4.0 and PD charge.

A full charge can last us more than two days depending on the use we make of the phone, the intensity of the brightness, activation of the Air Triggers, geolocation and more. Additionally, in Settings we have the Smart Battery option to limit the battery consumption of applications that are used less frequently.

Final words and conclusions about Asus Rog Phone II

The Asus Rog Phone II is a smartphone with all the letters. If you are one of those users who only want the best of the best, total autonomy, heart attack photos and a mobile phone prepared to run games without messing around, look no further.

The AMOLED screen quality is brutal, its Snapdragon 855 Plus processor makes absolutely all programs and games run and open in the blink of an eye and go smoothly. If we add to this a refresh rate of 120Hz, 12GB of RAM and expandable memory up to 1TB, what we are dealing with is a bug prepared for the most intense gaming marathons.

We recommend reading: The best Gaming smartphones on the market.

Its cameras and sound are characteristics that are not far behind, and it is that to have, we have up to 7.1 with DTS: X Ultra for headphones and front speakers also DTS: X Ultra with 5 magnets that laugh in the face of the competition.

Any catch? To be honest, the Asus Rog Phone II is a somewhat heavy smartphone even without a case, which reaches 240 grams as a base. There is also the question of its price, which starts from about € 699. It is not the most expensive phone on the market today, although the price is quite high for the average pocket. Of course, according to our experience, if you can have something for sure, it is worth every penny and it will hardly leave you stranded.
