The Asus ROG Strix RX 5600 XT TOP Edition is Asus' most radical version of AMD's new, just-out-of-the-oven GPU. With the recent tweak in the form of a new BIOS from the chipmaker, this GPU vastly outperforms the RX 5500 XT and matches the Nvidia RTX 2060 but without Ray Tracing.

Unboxing

This Asus ROG Strix RX 5600 XT TOP Edition has come to us in a very good flexible cardboard box full of information about the graphics card and its news on the back, and a photo next to the model in question on the front.

Inside, we have a second box, this time made of rigid cardboard and a box-type opening as usual in most models. The graphics card comes in a sealed antistatic bag and rests horizontally on a large high-density polyethylene foam mold for maximum protection.

Exterior design

The rain of RX 5600 XT graphics cards is present and we in this first wave have analyzed the three of the main manufacturers, Gigabyte, MSI and this Asus ROG Strix RX 5600 XT TOP Edition. AMD is putting a lot of material in the mid / high mid range, we could say after seeing that the results are not too far from an RX 5700, and more after the BIOS update that increases TDP and frequency of GDDR6 memories.

The model proposed by Asus is the one with the best features for this new family, and for this the prestigious ROG Strix heatsink that gives it its name has been used. It is a triple fan configuration that reveals on its upper face a very good quality plastic casing with aggressive lines. You should already know that in the openings on both sides of the fans we have Asus AURA RGB lighting installed, manageable from the AURA Creator software.

This heatsink is practically the same as that of the RX 5700 and 5700 XT, generating wide measures of 304 mm long, 130 mm wide and 54 mm thick, being one of the most voluminous we have in the assembler at the same time one of the most powerful. The weight rises above 1200 grams making it clear that Asus has committed everything to exceptional cooling. It consists of three 90mm Axial Tech Fan in helical configuration with 9 blades and a ring on the outer circumference that improves air flow and stability.

We have 0 dB technology so the Asus ROG Strix RX 5600 XT TOP Edition will keep its fans off whenever it is in idle state. It will only activate the fans under high load and high temperature above 60 o C. In this case the management of fans with GPU Tweak II is done in a group, that is, the RPM modification influences all of them at the same time. Likewise, we will never obtain its maximum speed of 3500 RPM unless we force it, since in principle with about 1200-1400 RPM it will be left over.

In the lateral areas they are perhaps a little more open than the average of graphic cards, due to the fact that they have somewhat finer fans. We see in the captures the entire heatsink very clearly even from the part visible to the user, which will ensure the expulsion of hot air perfectly. In addition we can also see on both sides the metal chassis that is responsible for stiffening the card from the inside, very good design work of the brand for this Asus ROG Strix RX 5600 XT TOP Edition, we think that superior to its rivals in finishes, aesthetics and forcefulness.

And we come to the upper area, where we have a blackplate just as good as the rest of the card set. For him, aluminum with a thickness of 2 mm has been used with brushed finishes and the serigraphy that gives personality to the ROG series. In addition, the logo of this area will light up to our delight and we can customize it with the corresponding software. Note that the power connections are noticeably tucked inward to improve cable reception and aesthetics. Also we have in the lower left corner the button to turn the lighting on or off directly from the GPU and a switch to select the BIOS, since this card is dual BIOS.

Ports and connections

We put aside the design of the Asus ROG Strix RX 5600 XT TOP Edition to focus on its video connections, in which we did not find any news, being:

In total we have 4 video outputs, where the most useful will be as always the DisplayPorts due to their greater bus width for high resolution and high frequency monitors. Let's remember once again that the DisplayPort port will give us a maximum resolution of 8K @ 60 FPS, 4K @ 165 FPS or 4K @ 60 Hz at 30 bits depth, 1080p @ 240 Hz, and in 5K we can reach 120 Hz. In the case of HDMI, it supports 4K @ 60 Hz resolution.

The connection interface is maintained in PCIe 4.0 like all Navi series GPUs. In this case, the power configuration is enough with a double 8 and 6-pin PCI connector for the 180W of TDP that we have in this GPU. Recall that initially it was 150W until the BIOS update before it was released.

Finally we have in the front area of ​​the GPU the two connectors related to the fans, with a 7-pin header, and lighting with a traditional 4-pin header.

This is very useful for this type of GPU so large, to give it more rigidity. In addition it has also been used to cool the GDDR6 memories thanks to 3 tiny finned heatsinks. We would have liked them to make contact with the main heatsink to be calm about possible overclockings.

RX 5600 XT Architecture

All the synthetic tests and tests have been carried out with the filters as they come in the configuration of each program. The tests consist of tests that run in the three main resolutions, Full HD, 2K and 4K. Game testing

We are now going to evaluate the real performance in games, thus having a more palpable proof of what our Asus ROG Strix RX 5600 XT TOP Edition will be able to deliver under DirectX 12 and OpenGL in this case.

The tests will be carried out at the three most used resolutions in gaming, we refer to Full HD (1920 x 1080p), QHD or 2K (2560 x 1440p) and UHD or 4K (3840 x 2160p). In this way, we will have a complete range of results to be able to compare them with other GPUs. For each of the games, we have kept the same quality settings in all three resolutions.

Overclocking

As in other cards, we are going to overclock this Asus ROG Strix RX 5600 XT TOP Edition to see how far we can increase its performance. For this we have used Afterburner for its enormous ease of use. In this way we have carried out a new test in 3DMark Fire Strike and new tests of Shadow Of The Tomb Raider in all three resolutions.

In this case we have also been able to increase the memory clock frequency and chipset to the maximum that Afterburner supports for this GPU, which is 1820 MHz for the chipset and 1860 MHz for memory, something like 14880 MHz effective frequency in the 6 GB GDDR6. With this we have managed to increase 4 FPS in FullHD, 2 FPS in 2K and 1 FPS in 4K, almost the same as the other cases with the 5600 XT.

The temperature will not be a problem because the margin we have to play with the fans is enormous.

Temperatures and consumption

Finally, we have proceeded to stress the Asus ROG Strix RX 5600 XT TOP Edition for a few hours while monitoring its temperatures and consumption. For this, we have used as FurMark for stress and HWiNFO to capture results, along with a wattmeter that measures the power of all the complete equipment, except the monitor. The ambient temperature in the room is 21 ° C.

With this piece of heatsink temperatures will not be a problem at all, since we have great figures both at rest and at maximum performance. The fans will not turn on until reaching the threshold of 60 o C in Tjunction, so therefore the temperatures at rest are around 38 o C. While under stress these values ​​stabilize at 65 o C, an excellent temperature if we take into account that the fans barely spin at 1400 RPM.

As for consumption, the increase in TDP has also been noticed, raising this GPU to just over 200W, so if we stress the whole set we are very close to 500W. Having opted for a double power connector we believe that it is the right thing to do on this card.

Final words and conclusion about Asus ROG Strix RX 5600 XT TOP Edition

Asus has also opted for a continuist design in its AMD GPU that is perfectly confused with those of Nvidia and other higher-performance models due to its huge and thick heatsink. This model is the manufacturer's highest performance with its triple fan and full of AURA Sync lighting.

As for performance, it has lagged slightly behind its Gigabyte and MSI rivals, with 2 or 3 FPS in some cases. It's not a noticeable difference in terms of gameplay, but it seems that rivals have been a little more aggressive in configuring their BIOS. In any case, it does honor of being the best cards for Full HD resolution with this Navi 10 chip and its 6 GB GDDR6 working at 14 Gbps. A wise decision to have uploaded this frequency to compete with the Nvidia RTX 2060.

The response to overclocking is more or less the same as in the other RX 5600 XT, increasing the performance in Full HD by 4 or 5 FPS depending on the game or even more for those with high rates. It is enough if we take into account the previous tested models such as the 5500 XT or the 5700 XT that did not earn anything. In this case we do have a much more permissive chipset in this regard.

The model that Asus proposes to us goes on sale this January 22, 2020 at a price of 395 euros, being a somewhat higher price than the competition. Its factory overclocking is somewhat superior although it is not reflected in improvements, and its construction, design and lighting are well above the other models. They only have to worry about the price drop of the Nvidia RTX 2060, we currently see versions of 319 euros and also has Ray Tracing, so if we caught any offer it would still be a better option.
