The Asus team surprises again with a new model of gaming headphones, the Asus Rog Theta 7.1 made with premium materials, Essence speakers, virtual subwoofers, precise positioning and sensational sound. Do you want to know more?
Asus Rog Theta 7.1 Unboxing
The presentation of the Asus Rog Theta 7.1 arrives in a box-type box with an outer cover in a case format. In it we are immediately greeted by the Asus logo along with the image and model name. In the right area of the cover is where we appreciate a set of stamps and certificates:
- IF Design Award 2019 Teamspeak Certificate Discord Audio Hi-Res Certificate
On the back of the case is where we find a greater amount of information. Here we can read about the characteristics of the drivers to achieve high precision 7.1 sound, ergonomics, connection versatility and AI sound cancellation technology.
Removing this cover we find the chest with a satin finish that highlights the brand's black palette with red contrasts. The only texts readable here are the product model and logo details highlighted with resin.

Asus Rog Theta 7.1 Headphone Design
The first thing that catches your eye when we take the Asus Rog Theta 7.1 out of its packaging is its size. These are robust and quite bulky headphones, one of the recent models that we have reviewed with larger pads. Its total weight reaches 650g, which is why you will understand us when we tell you that the manufacturing qualities and finishes really stand out.
The supraural band
The Asus Rog Theta 7.1 is a supraural model in which each earphone connects through an extender to the upper plush.
On the external face, the supraural band has a matte black plastic coating about 5mm thick. Engraved in low relief and highlighted with resin we can read on the side its well-known motto Republic of Gamers .
The inner lining, on the other hand, consists of a piece of memory foam covered in black fabric. This is fixed to the supraural arch by means of two clips that are responsible for pointing out the correct side of each earpiece for use.
It is also in this area where we observe the union with the aluminum alloy extenders. These have grooved marks for the regulation of levels that are engraved in the same metal.
On the external face it presents a geometric texture also visible on the packaging that combines polished surface finishes with other matte ones.
The connection point with the headphones is also very solid. The external part is also made of metal and thus protects an internal plastic structure to which the extenders are screwed.
The headphones
Turning now to comment on the structure of the headphones themselves, from the headband we find aluminum alloy temples that extend to a side hinge that allow a 90º turn, thus favoring optimized flexibility.
The headphones themselves feature an inverted D format that combines matte black plastic finishes with glossy details. Its reliefs and overall structure combine smooth curves with edges and geometric planes, enriching the design.
The presence of the Asus imager stands out in both headphones, which receives backlighting when they are in use and when they are off they are only in a brilliant black tone.
In these Asus Rog Theta 7.1 the controls are integrated in the left earphone as well as the connection of the removable microphone. These controls consist of a volume regulator and a toggle switch between 7.1 surround sound and stereo.
Turning to padding, the built-in cushions by default have a faux leather back finish combined with fabric for the inner lining. On the fabric that protects the contact with the drivers we find the printed Asus Imagologist.
Rog Hybrid pads have a reduced density, which favors heat dissipation by 25% and reduces pressure on the temples (something users with glasses will appreciate). This padding is perfectly removable for replacement and cleaning. This is where the second cloth-lined pair included in the box comes into play for those who feel this preference.
When we remove them we observe the four drivers of the Asus Rog Theta 7.1, consisting of a main 40mm model and three secondary 30mm ones. This is a set of Asus Essense speakers with virtual subwoofers. The amps are model ESS 9601 accompanied by DAC 7.1 for surround sound.
Something that is quite striking about this model is that the connection cable starts not only from one of them, but from both headphones separately. The connectors are not removable and have a rubber reinforcement of considerable thickness that practically guarantees an almost impossible break.
The microphone
As mentioned earlier, the microphone included with the Asus Rog Theta 7.1 is wireless. It has connection via 3.5 jack and is integrated into the left earphone.
Its structure consists of a steel rod covered in a thick rubber lining. Its flexibility is not excessive and it is difficult to maintain the position if we try to shape it too tightly, but this is also the price of a sturdy, snag-proof headset.
The collector structure is unidirectional and in it we find two circular perforations of different sizes. The smaller external one is for noise cancellation while the opposite is the microphone itself.
Wiring
The cable integrated in the Asus Rog Theta is of a generous thickness and we distinguish in it two clearly identifiable sections. Firstly, we have the right and left headphone jack by two rubber-coated connectors that are joined in a crosshead from which the main cable extends.
This section of the cable, on the other hand, is of a lower thickness but is lined with fiber, ending in a USB Type-C port. Its general extension is 120cm and it has details with the Asus logo highlighted in resin. Broadly speaking, it is very resistant, although the division into the right and left switches may startle some users from the start, given that it is a somewhat bulky format.
In addition to this we have an adapter / extender with a USB type C socket and USB type A output. This second cable, sheathed in rubber, has a length of 100cm and allows us to use the Asus Rog Theta 7.1 on a greater number of devices (and gain a little more cable)
Putting Asus Rog Theta 7.1 headphones to use
With the first contact, it is clear that we are dealing with large and very solid headphones. The format of the pads is very spacious, so we will have more than enough space for the ears without feeling them pressed, something in which the material chosen for the memory foam helps a lot.
Ergonomics and comfort
The isolation of the headphones is adequate. We have passive sound cancellation thanks to the pads, although it is not especially intense since they have been oriented more towards heat dissipation. At no time have we noticed a sensation of sweat or pressure in the ears, but we can hear external sound if we do not have the headphones with a high volume.
However, it should be noted that for those of us with a somewhat smaller skull, we will notice that the headphones dance a little, especially if we make movements or slightly abrupt turns. Another aspect that does not convince us is the dual cable format for left and right earphones. It is undoubtedly a very resistant model, but also quite rigid until it reaches the fiber-lined fragment.
The issue of weight may also be relevant for some users, since although the Asus Rog Theta 7.1 is undoubtedly a very comfortable headset, its 650g is a somewhat high weight for long gaming sessions.
Sound quality
The first thing to note when we connect the Rog Theta 7.1 is that the background static sound once they are active is non-existent. Accompanying the premium quality of the materials we have premium drivers with great sound quality. The joint work of the eight Essence speakers create a very complete acoustic environment, something that is enhanced by the effect of virtual subwoofers for the lowest tones.
The sound is satisfactory in both stereo and 7.1 formats, shining quite a bit in the latter. Without a doubt, the frequency response range (20Hz-40kHz) is noticeable and we can make the most of it in all the games that are compatible with surround sound. On the microphone, noise cancellation with artificial intelligence is definitely recommended (we must configure it in the software). The system with which it is programmed manages to attenuate external sounds from our direct environment (keyboard, voices, mouse clicks) and the fact that it is unidirectional contributes a lot to this effect.
RGB lighting
Obviously we could not finish commenting on the use without referring to the RGB lighting of the side logos. The result is very good maximum intensity and pure colors.
Something that has pleasantly surprised us is that although the external coverage of the imager is black, the resulting tones are saturated and vibrant, being an especially attractive detail when we customize the effects using the Armory II software.
software
The last question to address before moving on to our final conclusions is the settings and options available within the asus software, the Armory II.
The main panel presents itself with a lot of options. There are four main categories among which we can navigate, being Headset the one in which we will modify the configuration of the Asus Rog Theta 7.1.
Inside Headphones we find:
- Sonic Studio: Allows you to manually set stereo or 7.1 sound as well as the sample rate. We can also control the volume and intensity of the microphone volume output. We also have the category of sound optimization (equalizer settings, bass, compressor, profile) and options for the microphone (AI sound cancellation or perfect voice effect among others.)
- Lighting: allows us to choose the color pattern and apply saturation and brightness adjustments to some of them. Synchronization: allows us to coordinate all those Asus peripherals that have RGB lighting so that they follow the same pattern.
Final words and conclusions about Asus Rog Theta 7.1
The Asus Rog Theta 7.1 have made a very good impression on us. Starting with its spectacular packaging and design quality, ending with the technical characteristics of both sound and microphone. Although it is true that their weight and wiring do not convince us to the same extent, it must be recognized that these are headphones made to last.
Undoubtedly, the choice of the USB-C connector is an alternative with a view to the future that allows us to activate 7.1 surround sound not only on PCs and consoles, but on the latest smartphone models. The eight Asus Essense drivers do a spectacular job and the RGB lighting meanwhile allows us to establish our favorite gaming style and contributes to that aesthetic that has made the Asus Rog Theta 7.1 winners of the 2019 IF Design Award.

The Asus Rog Theta 7.1 are on sale for € 332.17. It is undoubtedly a fairly high price but if we take into account all its features and the sound drivers they have, it is evident that here we pay for premium quality in both design and materials and sound. But what do you think? Are the Asus Rog Theta 7.1 worth the price? Leave us your opinion in the comments!
