Unboxing and design

Asus maintains a high-end presentation with its Asus RTX 2060 Strix and its ROG design. In it we can see a great logo of this series designed for gamers, which incorporates 6 GB of memory, overclocking capacity and incorporates the AURA RGB Sync lighting system.

Asus always puts all its love in its products and this time it would not be less. On the back we are informed of the most outstanding characteristics of the card, such as Nvidia's Turing architecture, the DirectCu III cooling system that has been the most used for several generations with its triple fans and rear connections. What more can we ask for? We continue!

The graphics card comes perfectly protected by several foam frames and inside an antistatic bag, in this way they ensure that it reaches our hands in the best condition. But what is inside? We'll meet:

  • The Asus RTX 2060 Strix Documentation and Quick GuideDriversTwo Velcro Straps

As expected the GPU is very robust and brilliantly built. The quality of all the materials is immediately palpable. The top of the heatsink is made of black metal, helping to improve the firmness of a heavyweight graphic and improve cooling.

It is time to talk about your DirectCU III triple fan heatsink compatible with Wing-Blade technology. These fans are capable of increasing the static pressure of the air on the heatsink by 105%. We also have great resistance to dust, with the IP5X certificate and 0 DB technology that keeps the fans stopped at rest until 55 degrees.

MaxContact technology will help us to bend the dissipation contact surface of the heatsink. With this we will achieve a more direct and more efficient heat transfer.

On the back of the card we see a robust black aluminum backplate, which has the function of adding rigidity to the set and protecting the delicate components on the back of the PCB. The ROG logo benefits from Asus' proprietary RGB lighting.

One of the screws incorporates a sticker. This is to know if we have opened the GPU or not…

Like the RTX 2070 series, Nvidia has eliminated the possibility of SLI or NVLink on these cheaper models. The idea is clear, to avoid cannibalization with the superior models. A couple of generations ago it was very common to mount a pair of mid-range graphics cards to have a somewhat higher performance than the top of the range with a lower price but with much higher power consumption. Although we have always recommended buying a monoGPU before an SLI.

If you are not a lover of RGB, we can turn it off using this button or from the Aura Sync software itself. We also have a dual BIOS selector that allows us to choose between the two serial profiles: Silent Mode or Normal Mode.

Regarding video connections we find:

  • Two standard DisplayPort 1.4a connections, Two HDMI 2.0b connections

Nvidia Turing includes a new video decoding engine, which is now compatible with DisplayPort 1.4a and offers lossless DSC support. This allows 8K to 30Hz resolutions to be achieved using a single cable, or 8K to 60Hz when DSC is enabled.

We miss Virtual Link connection that does bring the Founders Edition version. Asus why haven't you put it on? Lovers of virtual reality will not like this news, although we can play with the installed connections.

It also offers two 4-pin PWM or DC fan headers to sync your chassis fans with the graphics card and an addressable RGB header. This technology is called ASUS FanConnect II and it allows us to install installed fans that take into account the temperatures of the graphics card and adjust to the appropriate speed to improve the cooling of the system. What do you think? ?

Heatsink and PCB

To disassemble the heatsink we must remove a total of 6 screws. If you ever have to do this maintenance, we recommend that you heat the graphics card by playing or using applications like Furmark.

Once we see the heatsink we find a total of six heatpipes of direct contact with the GPU and welds of the best possible quality, so that the heat transfer is optimal at all times. The application of the thermal paste, at least in this unit, is somewhat improvable, but it is equally effective.

This Asus GeForce RTX 2060 Strix incorporates a custom designed PCB that we take our hats off with it. As usual Asus integrates Super Allow Power II components that offers Ultra Durable quality. What is this for? Overclock, have lower temperatures and have a longer longevity. All welds are passed in a single pass and aggressive chemicals are removed from all components to improve the environment.

Its powerful custom VRM allows it to offer factory overclockable speeds of 1365 MHz in the GPU core with a Boost of 1750 MHz. This card mounts the TU106 core, which is manufactured by TSMC at 12nm FinFET. It has 1920 CUDA Cores, 120 TMUs, and 48 ROPs. To all this we must add 30 RT cores and 240 Tensor Core. The graphics card is accompanied by 6GB of 14Gbps GDDR6 memory with a 192-bit interface.

This PCB is powered by two auxiliary power connectors, one 8-pin and the other 6-pin. Asus recommends us to use a power supply of at least 550W to avoid problems. The TDP of this card is approximately 160 W, making it a very powerful GPU with very careful consumption. The work that the Asus boys have done with this PCB is 10. Our congratulations.

For benchmarks we will use the following titles:

  • 3DMark Fire Strike normal. 3Mark Fire Strike 4K version. Time Spy.VRMARK.

All tests have been passed with the filters to the maximum unless we indicate otherwise. In order to have adequate performance, we have carried out three types of tests: the first is the most common at Full HD 1920 x 1080, the second resolution is making the leap for 2K or 1440P (2560 x 1440P) gamers and the most enthusiastic with 4K (3840 x 2160). The operating system we have used has been Windows 10 Pro 64 bit and the latest drivers available from the Nvidia website.

What are we looking for in the tests?

First, the best possible image quality. The most important value for us is the average FPS (Frames per second), the higher the number of FPS the more fluid the game will go. To differentiate the quality a bit, we leave you a table to assess the quality in FPS, but we will also have the minimum Fps in the tests that were thus possible:

FRAMES BY SECONDS

Frames for Seconds. (FPS)

Gameplay

Less than 30 FPS Limited
30 ~ 40 FPS Playable
40 ~ 60 FPS Good
Greater than 60 FPS Fairly Good or Excellent

Game Testing

Overclocking

Note: Remember that overclocking or manipulation carries a risk, we and any manufacturer are not responsible for improper use, use the head and always do so at your own risk.

We have been able to upload the graphics card + 60 MHz in the graphic core and +800 points (+ 200 MHz) in the memories. The result is quite noticeable, since we went from 20, 020 to 20, 833 points in Graphics Score in Fire Strike. In gaming performance it does not show much, but that extra power can come in handy for the future .

Temperature and consumption

As we can see the temperatures are higher at rest compared to the Founders Edition model. This is because you have the fans stopped at rest. While keeping temperatures cool at full load. At the aesthetic and design level it is one step higher than the reference.

It is time to show you a couple of images taken with our FLIR thermal camera. In it we can see that the most critical points of this graphics card are found behind the backplate: memories, power supply phases and chipset.

We really liked that the PCI Express connection is well protected and cooled. The temperatures are outstanding. Great job Asus!

Consumption is for the entire team *

As we can see in the graph it consumes like a lighter. At low load we have 44 W and at maximum power it goes up to 271 W only the graphics card. When we stress the processor with Prime95 we get a maximum of 370 W.

Final words and conclusion about Asus RTX 2060 Strix

The Asus RTX 2060 Strix features 6GB of GDDR6 memory, a Direct III heatsink with a triple fan, a custom PCB with top-notch components. That as almost everyone knows, a larger surface size means a greater capacity to cool down, so this card will be much cooler as well as quieter than the reference Nvidia. and frequencies higher than the reference model.

After our tests we have been able to verify the great performance that this graphics card offers. Rushing many times a couple of FPS compared to the reference model. If we overclock we can further increase the power. Great work from the Asus ROG team!

We recommend reading the best graphics cards on the market

As we already mentioned in the analysis of the Founders Edition, it seems to us an ideal graphics card for Full HD and WQHD resolution. It even helps us to make a fix for 4K. Also keep in mind that it perfectly moves Ray Tracing at 60 FPS at 1920 x 1080 pixels.

The only thing we miss is a Virtual Link connection for virtual glasses. We do not understand how they have decided to exclude it, since it comes standard. It is a fact to keep in mind for lovers of virtual reality.

Starting today it will start listing in the main online stores for a recommended price of 479 euros. We believe that it will be one of the great alternatives that the market offers. A 100% recommended purchase.
