Asus VivoWatch: Unboxing and first impressions

Full bundle

As with the Asus ZenWatch we find a PREMIUM presentation in a compact white box with a product image on the cover. On the sides we have the company logo. Once we open the box we find the following bundle:

  • Asus VivoWatch watch. Charger base.

The design is very elegant, with a rectangular-shaped dial and stainless steel edges with a silver hue that pleases the eye. We have a 22mm sporty rubber strap with a classic clasp that allows us to adjust the watch to our wrist size. Its screen has dimensions of 1.63 inches and a resolution of 128 x 128 in black and white, incorporates Gorilla Glass 3 protection. During tests in broad daylight it was not difficult to see all the content on the screen, the reason is because it efficiently regulates the brightness settings.

Base for battery charging

We stand at the back of the VivoWatch which unlike its ZenWatch brother has the power button on the right side. Once we stop at the back we have the charging connection and an optical sensor with a green light that its function is to control the pulse of our wrist.

Among its technical characteristics we did not find much information but we can say that the processor that it includes inside is a Cortex A-53 and for its installation we need Asus proprietary applications. While to establish synchronization with our smartphone we will use the Bluetooth 4.0 connection. As with the other watches, it does not have its own connectivity to the mobile network. It also has sensors designed to monitor physical activity such as an accelerometer, gyroscope, compass, and a heart rate sensor, UV sensor, and sleep. I did not like that it does not include the integrated GPS which is the only negative point of this magnificent wearable.

Greater resistance and durability

In this version there are two premises resistance and durability of the system. The watch allows greater resistance to water and dust as it is certified to the IP67 standard. This technology allows us to be with him in the shower or under water with a maximum depth of 1 meter and a maximum duration of 30 minutes. So I do not recommend its daily use for swimming, as it does not meet the IP68 certification.

Durability also has its importance, and it is that many of us have abhorred these devices that need daily charging along with our smartphones. As of today there are only two devices that are capable of giving us 7 days of autonomy: Pebble and the Asus VivoWatch, and the latter offers us up to 100%. We have tried to use it for 10 days and it effectively reaches it without problem, going from 100% to 10% in this period. Be careful that it only has a 369 mAh battery.

Monitoring of physical activity

The Vivowatch needs the HiVivo application for daily use that we can find in the Google play store. This application informs us of the model number, firmware version, activate the alarm function, choose between several dials or update to the latest version on the watch.

Once installed, it asks us for our height, weight, sex and age. In it we can see all the physical activity we have done throughout the week or daily and set our own goals or connect with friends with the same watch. Several images are worth a thousand words:

Final words and conclusion

It is clear that the Asus VivoWatch is a smartwatch focused on the line of sports users. It offers us many utilities such as monitoring physical activity such as the accelerator-meter, the gyroscope, the compass, heart rate meter, UV sensor, sleep and incoming call notification. But we miss reading WhatsApps messages, Facebook messages or tweets.

We slept with the watch for a couple of nights and sleep tracking is very successful. Notice that it is not necessary to activate it, since it is factory default. I really liked that when we are running along the promenade, if our heart rate is higher than we should be, it warns us with a red LED so that we slow down and stay at the rate according to our weight, height and age.

In short, if you are looking for a smarwatch with advanced fitness functions with a classic watch design and highly successful software, the Asus VivoWatch is one of the perfect candidates on the market. Coming soon to Spanish stores for a price of around € 149. ADVANTAGE
