Backblaze, a cloud storage service provider, has released its 2019 edition of data that summarizes the failure rate of the hard drives used in its data center. The data from more than 120, 000 hard drives is organized by manufacturer and data capacity, so you can easily see which models currently have a higher failure rate.

At the end of 2019, 122, 658 hard drives functioned as Backblaze data storage. Data collected from 122, 507 hard drives, excluding hard drives used for testing purposes and models with less than 5, 000 days of total working days and that are not statistically significant, are as follows.
The average annual failure rate (AFR) of all hard drives in 2019 was 1.89%, which is a decrease of 0.74 points compared to 1.25% in 2018. The only drive The 4TB hard drive that had no failures in 2019 was the Toshiba model (MD04ABA400V), which only had 99 drives running.
There are two main factors that caused the annual failure rate to deteriorate from 2018 to 2019. First, Seagate's 8TB model is approaching half its life cycle and the annual failure rate has begun to worsen. The annual failure rate itself is not high enough to be of concern, but as it represents a large percentage of the total number of hard drives, the average annual failure rate has increased. The second point is that the annual failure rate of Seagate's 12TB model, which has more than 30, 000 units in operation, is higher than usual. The cause is currently under investigation and will be resolved in cooperation with Seagate.
Backblaze managed to increase total capacity by 181PB (181, 000TB) from 2018 as a result of increased capacity, such as the replacement of all 8800 hard drives by 12TB models in 2019.
Finally, for all the models that were running on Backblaze at the end of 2019, the total failure rates from the start of operation in 2013 to the end of 2019 are as follows. All HGST models have a failure rate of less than 1% and have phenomenal reliability. Despite the small number of units in operation, Toshiba models also maintain a low failure rate.
